So now that the CAS have suspended the transfer ban that had been imposed on Chelsea by UEFA over the Gael Kakuta affair, the press are going to town about how Chelsea will be spending big money in January to cover players leaving for the African Nations Cup and also to plan for the future transfer windows just in case the ban is upheld after appeal.
The likes of Aguero & Villa have been banded about again and again just like in the summer and I am sure that the rumours will intensify come nearer the window in January. But as I posted before on here back at the beginning of the season I have to ask the question once more where we are now and that's "do we need anymore?"
So we are coming up to the busy Christmas period where alot of people say has a major effect on the title race. The Premier League table starts to take shape and people have an idea who will be there or there abouts come May when its showtime. We have qualified to the knockout stages of the Champions League, we sit 5-points clear at the top of the Premier League and are through to the quarter finals of the League Cup with a favourable draw away at Blackburn.
Its hardly a nightmare situation to be in is it?!. But based on the current form of the players in the squad let's have a look at the possibilities for change as I am sure something to do with Chelsea will happen, whether it will be out or in, something will happen. The questions that I put to you reading this article now is: "Who goes and where do we strengthen?".
Do we honestly think that someone will go? I am not so sure. The squad looks tight and together at the moment. Things may change as we get to the latter part of the year leading upto Christmas, but for now I can't see anyone leaving. Remember, we have the likes of Ferriera and Joe Cole back after being out with long injuries. Zhirkov has never really been fully fit but is getting there. Alex is back from an injury so is in the same position as Zhirkov, getting match fit and ready to play a part.
Its obvious that its the forward line that would need bolstering if we were to spend in January. But who would you bring in and how would they fit into the team once Drogba returns from the African Nations?. Once Drogba is back do you leave out Anelka for the likes of Aguero or David Villa?. Do you stick with what we have and play Anelka plus one of Sturridge and the returning Di Santo from his loan at Blackburn? Sturridge hasn't cut it in a Chelsea shirt but it is early days. He has had limited chances for the first team start that will get him settled in and thats because of the form of Drogba and Anelka.
Sturridge is pacey, two footed and has a real eye for goal. Di Santo is a goalscorer but has his ariel presence about him and would be the perfect foil for Anelka. Of course not Drogba quality but has scored in the Premier League for Blackburn so no reason he can't do it for us. But would you be happy to see us line up with either of these playing next to Anelka?
In January we will face Hull away, Sunderland at home, Birmingham at home and then Burnley away so you could argue that we should be more than capable to pick up 12 points without bringing people in. But, there is still the need for experienced cover and Ancelotti will know that more than anyone.
So if its down to you and respond to this post as I am always interested in your opinions. Who would you get rid of (if anyone) and who would you bring in?

Really good article.
ReplyDeleteMy view is that Chelsea do need to reinforce in January - but not because the squad isn't strong enough in the short term or because of the African Cup of Nations.
The club needs to hedge against the possiblity that the FIFA ban will be upheld. Regardless of how they are playing now, many of them are the wrong side of thirty and we should be gradually replacing them over the next few seasons rather than all in one go in three years time.
My view is - bring in one or two younger (but established) talents now. Doesn't have to be the over-expensive Aguero type signing, but an ambitious deal to bring a very good prospect with experience in a reasonable league.
I've written a post of my own on whether Chelsea will make any signings - check my chelsea blog out at www.bridgeviews.co.uk if you get a minute.
