Chelsea took the much needed three points from St James' Park Newcastle yesterday. It was a game that the Geordies were up for with new Manager Alan Shearer on the touchline for his first game in charge. Some would say a task made harder for Chelsea with 52,000 passionate fans behind their side and their new manager.
Chelsea showed a class apart from Newcastle. Newcastle hardly troubled Chelsea in the game, Martins put one wide in the first half and (you have to say) a debatable decision to now allow Michael Owen's deflected chip which looked well over the line were the only real chances of note for Newcastle.
The Chelsea side that started the game was as follows:
Cech, Ivanovic, Alex, Terry, Cole, Essien, Mikel, Lampard, Malouda, Anelka & Kalou.
Chelsea once the initial rush of excitement and enthusiasm had calmed down after the start of the game took control and Kalou had the first real chance of the game in the first half forcing a reaction save from Harper. Martins then bundled a cross wide for Newcastle, Anelka broke free from a nice through ball and looked to pull the trigger before a combination of Beye and Harper blocked his effort and forced a deflection for a corner.
Second half was pretty much the same until Chelsea broke the deadlock in the 58th minute. Coloccini dithered on a back pass and Anelka closed him and down and blocked his clearance which fell to the on rushing Malouda, his touch fell to Lampard who managed to ride a half hearted challenge from Coloccini, the ball fell to Anelka who's deflected effort came back off of the crossbar and there was Super Frank Lampard to head into the bottom corner 1-0.
At this point the Geordies there to watch a miracle with Shearer in charge soon realised its going to be a massive ask to turn things round and Chelsea compounded their misery when they added a second. A long kick from Cech found Anelka who's flick on fell to Lampard, who took a touch and slid the ball through to Malouda who hit the ball first time under Harper into the bottom corner.
It was a great performance and a great result. Let's not worry about the other sides around us, as long as we keep winning games we will be there or there abouts. This result goes to prove the strength in depth we have especially for the next two weeks. Carvalho and Drogba were missing and Ballack was rested from this one (the latter coming on half way through the second half) but i think this was with one eye on Wednesday in the Champions League. Again, we needed a result and we stepped up with a great 3 points and another clean sheet.
Chelsea: Cech, Ivanovic, Alex, Terry, Ashley Cole, Essien (Ballack 57), Mikel, Lampard, Malouda, Anelka (Di Santo 67), Kalou.
Subs Not Used: Hilario, Carvalho, Deco, Belletti, Mancienne.
