Before he arrived at Chelsea last summer, Timo Werner was one of the hottest strikers in European football. In his last season at RP Leipzig, he scored 34 goals in all competitions.
The German lacked confidence in his opening season in England. He managed just six Premier League goals in 34 games. That was not through a shortage of chances, Werner was creating opportunities, but failing to finish them. With that first year behind him now, this could be the season when Werner finally shows what he is made of. The 25-year-old will be enjoying some well-deserved rest ahead of the 2021/22 campaign as he also featured for Germany at Euro 2020.
Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel looks set to stick with Werner as his number one striker next season. Olivier Giroud has left the club to join AC Milan, while Tammy Abraham is likely to be given the option to go out on loan. A good start to the season would really help Werner settle and if he does find the net in the opening few games of the campaign, that could lead to many more goals and help Chelsea challenge for major honours this season. Chelsea are joint second-favourites in the Premier League betting at 5/1 for the title, alongside Liverpool. With their leading striker in hot form, they would have a much better chance of winning the league than those odds suggest.
Kai Havertz Can Take Pressure Off Werner
Some of the pressure to score the vast majority of Chelsea’s goals can be taken off Werner’s shoulders by Kai Havertz. The 21-year-old had an excellent end to last season, with the highlight being his goal in the Champions League final against Manchester City.
The German does not play in a traditional centre-forward position, however, under Tuchel, he has featured in a more advanced role up the field. His pace often allows him to break the defensive line of the opposition and get into goalscoring posistions.
The most exciting thing about Havertz is that he will continue to improve. There were signs during Euro 2020 that he had developed even further from the player we saw last season. He can play a big role in helping Werner increase his return in the 2021/22 campaign.
Tuchel Has A Full Pre-Season To Work With His Players
When Tuchel was appointed the new Chelsea manager last season, the Blues were ninth in the Premier League table. He was able to help his side recover from that disappointing start to finish fourth at the end of the campaign and also steered the Blues to an unexpected Champions League triumph.
The German now has the opportunity to have a pre-season with his players. This could really help the likes of Werner. Although there is no doubt his squad quickly bought into his way of doing things, this time before the season begins is the chance for the coach to work on some tactical adjustments.
With the help of Tuchel, hopefully we see a Werner who is pushing for the Golden Boot award next year. If he does that, he can still go on to become a club legend in the same vein
