Chelsea are expected to announce the signing of Jorginho from Napoli for a fee of £50m within the next few days with the player being heavily linked for the past week. Could his signing signal the end of Cesc Fabregas at Stamford Bridge?
Now it's seems ridiculous to say it really knowing what Fabregas has achieved here at this football club ever since he arrived four years ago. What is important to remember is that time doesn't stand still, football moves on and the pace of the game is getting quicker.
Cesc Fabregas' ability with the ball at his feet is literally second to none and we have seen him work wonders with his magic hat up and down the country. However, the game has changed so much now that everyone is expected to pull their weight without the ball and this is where things go against him. Don't get me wrong, I love the bloke for coming here and giving what he has for the shirt, but we need to be realistic.
This is where the potential signing of Jorginho comes in. Granted, I didn't know much about him and have had to rely on watching videos such as the one below of him to get an idea of what he is all about. It's clear to see that he is more than capable with the ball at his feet but most importantly, without it. He could become quite the foil for N'Golo Kante in the heart of our midfield if he were to sign.
At 26 years of age, Jorginho is at the perfect time in his career to come and ply his trade in the Premier League. He has obvious talent and ability which would be well suited in my view and although the transfer fee is a substantial amount, it would be a shrewd investment.
He's classed as a defensive midfielder but as you can see, his range of passing is excellent coupled with good anticipation. He reads the game well from the deeper midfield position and is quick to break up opposition play to then move the ball forward to put his team back on the front foot.
What I like from what I have seen above is his ability to step forward within attacking areas and to look for the killer pass to unlock the door and create goal-scoring opportunities. That is something that although we can all see it from the stands or on TV, is difficult to manage in the speed of our modern game.
It will be interesting to see if Cesc Fabregas remains at Chelsea and is part and parcel of the new management's plans moving forward. Surely playing Jorginho and Kante together with Fabregas further forward is an option, even Ross Barkley as an alternative - we will just have to wait and see.
It's been a story that has gathered real momentum this passed week and looks as though its reaching completion - Jorginho to Chelsea.
What do you think of the signing and of being a possible replacement for Cesc Fabregas?
