Antonio Rudiger has signed for Chelsea for a reported fee of £31m rising to £33m and signed a five-year contract. The German international is Antonio Conte's first major summer signing.
The Defender joins Chelsea having won the Confederations Cup recently and has taken the number two shirt vacated by Branislav Ivanovic last January.Which name would you get on the back of your @nikefootball Chelsea home shirt today? 👀 #WeAreThePride pic.twitter.com/WKmYxd2x0K— Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) July 9, 2017
Having signed yesterday, Rudiger revealed that it was the prospect of defending for Antonio Conte that excites him and as he regards as the next step for him with his career development.
He said:
“For me the Premier League is the most challenging league in the world and Chelsea with Antonio Conte and his style of defending will be the next step forward for me.
When I heard of the offer of Chelsea I had to think about it and I realised that in life you never know if you’ll get a second chance.
Not every player has the opportunity to join a huge club like this.” - Source: The Sun.
Now I have to be honest, I know very little about him so took some time out to have a look at what he can offer Chelsea and I have to say I am more than happy with his signing.
He can play anywhere across the back four in the middle or as a full back on both sides. He would be more than comfortable playing either side of David Luiz in our back three if Antonio Conte decides to continue with the system that served us so well.
He has pace, he is strong, he loves a tackle and can play the ball with both feet which is ideal for us. The only concern I have is that he loves a lunge into a tackle and would need to ensure his timing is spot on otherwise he could find himself in trouble over here.
With John Terry leaving, we had to ensure that we bought someone in that was strong and could cope with the demands of the Premier League. Having seen the video above, I have little doubt that Antonio Rudiger can do exactly that.
Welcome to Chelsea Antonio!
