According to various reports Tiemoue Bakayoko has rejected the opportunity to join Jose Mourinho at Manchester United because he is a big fan on Antonio Conte.
The 22-year-old is expected to have his medical at the club to complete a £35m deal this week as Antonio Conte looks to play him alongside his french team mate N'Golo Kante. He will sign a five-year deal.
I still have my reservations over Chelsea's decision to sell Nemanja Matic to Manchester United for the same figure as the signing of Bakayoko because of Premier League experience. Matic has been there and done that as far as the Premier League is concerned whereas Bakayoko will need time to come in and adjust to life here.
There is little doubt that Bakayoko is a real talent and has made his mark at Monaco this past year with his performances in Ligue 1 and in the Champions League. The fact that he would come in to line up alongside Kante will help him settle into England and to make the transition easier.
Players such as Nathaniel Chalobah can only be disappointed with his arrival however as you would have to imagine that he would look to make more appearances in the first team next season. That still may be the case however as Conte will look to rotate his players to cope with the additional demands of the Champions League.
I sincerely hope that Bakayoko can have the same impact at Chelsea as he did at Monaco. I have my reservations but who am I to judge an Antonio Conte signing after what he has achieved at Chelsea so far.
Bakayoko at 22 would be someone the club has earmarked to form an important part of the spine that will take Chelsea forward into the next few years as we look to create another decade of success.
Let's see what happens!
