According to various reports, Roman Abramovich has agreed to back the new Manager Antonio Conte and is willing to pay a £97m release clause to sign Paul Pogba from Juventus!
First and foremost we have to remember that there is always going to be all sorts of speculation linking us with his old players in Italy and some other big names. In fact, ever since the announcement was made on Tuesday the rumour mill has moved into overdrive but one name has remained constant throughout and that's Pogba. It will be interesting to see what happens to Pogba after Euro2016 this summer.
The press have very different opinions about a deal for one of the hottest properties in the game at the moment. A report featured in The Sun states that the Chelsea owner is willing to sanction the massive bid spoken about here. However, other reports indicate that Chelsea would be willing to pay less money but send TWO of our current players to Juventus as part of a swap deal with the players being Oscar and Willian!
The problem that people seem to have forgotten about is the fact that Chelsea are without Champions League football and Europa League football next season and for some of the big names in the game it's a massive draw. Why would anyone will be playing in the Champions League next season give up the opportunity to come to Chelsea? Eden Hazard admitted himself that he only joined Chelsea because we had won it in Munich that year - it's foolish to underestimate how important the competition is to players.
I personally cannot see Roman Abramovich spending almost £100m on a single player unless there is a massive clear out at Chelsea with the club making plenty of monies through player sales. In order to do so, then the likes of Fabregas, Costa and Hazard would be sold so it will be interesting to see what happens after the new manager made an unscheduled visit to Cobham this week to talk with them.
As for a swap deal involving Oscar and Willian again I am not so sure. Of course it all comes down to the manager's preference and how he wants to approach setting up a tactical system to implement from next season but with Willian in particular, Chelsea cannot afford to lose him. As we have seen and heard recently, Conte demands discipline and hard work and both will give him that.
I have little doubt that Chelsea have been tracking Paul Pogba for years now and have made their interest known to Juventus AND to the player. Maybe the signing of Conte, the man who first gave Pogba his breakthrough at Juventus and helped to transform him into the player he is today, would play a massive part what Pogba wants to do.
I cannot help but look at the figure being quoted and think that we could sign at least three or four players for that to bolster a few areas in our squad rather than just the one.
What do you people think of these two reports and of the staggering amount of money? In fact, do you think Paul Pogba is worth it?
