Chelsea beat the Arsenal yesterday 1-0 with a goal from Diego Costa in what was arguably our performance of the season.
Much has been said and written about the game already but no one can deny the facts. Chelsea were well on top of Arsenal with Cesc Fabregas bossing the midfield BEFORE Per Mertersacker was sent off. So what if Diego Costa made a meal of the challenge, are you telling me that Alexis Sanchez, Olivier Giroud or Mesut Ozil wouldn't do the same??
The big slow German defender should never have got caught in that situation and watching the TV coverage of the game last night, why on earth did he take his eyes off the ball to check what the Linesman was doing split second before he made the challenge. If anything, he should have been sent off for intent.
One thing I will never understand and I have said this before about teams playing against Chelsea at the minute is why Wenger took Giroud off after the German was sent off? Surely you need a focal point up front for when you need an out-ball or someone in the box as it proved later in the game? Giroud was removed and Arsenal preferred to play on the counter attack by leaving their faster players on. As the game played out, Arsenal did well in the second half up to the final third but missed someone of quality in the box to put away the chances they were creating rather than the ball fall to Flamini!
Chelsea were outstanding in that first half. Time and time again we would move the ball through midfield without a telling challenge being made to get into the final third. Willian, Fabregas and Costa were pulling the strings being supported by Oscar and Arsenal were having real problems with dealing with the threat we pose.
Diego Costa had a shocked saved from close range, Fabregas a shot blocked, we had another effort saved by Cech at his near post and Branislav Ivanovic had a header from a corner cleared off the line
Chelsea were dominant and it was fantastic to see.
Our goal was a good one to score at exactly the right moment. Gabriel had just come on to fill in at centre back as Arsenal tried to re-organise and Diego Costa's movement off the ball proved decisive. I had posted up earlier in the day that one of the Arsenal weaknesses was that they switch off and get caught ball watching and it's exactly what happened here!
Chelsea with possession down the left cross the ball into the box which is half cleared out to the right. Branislav Ivanovic looks up, sees Costa make a move to the near post and fires in one of the best crosses of a ball I believe he ever has to Costa who beats his marker and Cech at the near post to flick the ball into the net making it 1-0 Chelsea and it was well-deserved!
Overall it was a shame that there was a sending off because I would have liked to have won the game against eleven. Chelsea were so dominant at that stage I really do not believe it would have made a difference. Yes, Arsenal created some chances in the second half but only registered a single shot on target in the whole game. In fact, the only criticism I have of us yesterday was that we were not clinical enough and never put Arsenal away for three or four.
This was a massive result for Chelsea and should hopefully prove to be the springboard we need to really kick on now. We have the quality, we look confident again and with Diego Costa scoring goals (six in six games under Hiddink) we should now get on a run to climb the table.
Arsene Wenger should know by now that football is more than ever a results business. It doesn't matter how you win the big games, you just have to get the job done. That's five years unbeaten against Arsenal now for Chelsea and it's almost as if Arsenal are suffering the same mental block that Barcelona have when they play us as that's the double over them this season.
Everyone had written Chelsea off as I wrote yesterday morning. It didn't matter if we turned up because Arsenal would turn us over on their way to moving back to the top of the table. Now this morning the focus will be on Costa, the sending off and Arsenal. How about people give Chelsea credit for once and admit that you should never ever write us off because on our day we can beat anyone!
What a massive performance and a massive three points!
