Chelsea drew 0-0 with Dynamo Kiev tonight and if anything, deserved to walk away with three points but for the woodwork and a penalty claim once again denied by the Referee! Most importantly of all, It was a much better performance.
Chelsea looked like the Chelsea of last season tonight and when I say last season, I am referring to the beginning of last season. Back then we were playing some fantastic football, scoring goals and winning games and we are slowly beginning to look something like the same team again based on this performance.
Eden Hazard and Willian both hit the woodwork and yet again, Chelsea were denied a clear penalty as Cesc Fabregas was caught first of all, then bundled into the box right in front of the officials but nothing was given. It was the only negative on the night for me.
Here are the FIVE positives to take from the game:
1. Chelsea's pressing.
From the moment the game started, Chelsea looked well up for the game and played a high pressing game that started from Diego Costa up front, right through the team to our defenders and it was really good to see. On numerous occasions, you could see Jose out in his technical area challenging the players to go and do it and time and time again they responded.
2. Clean Sheet.
That's two clean sheets now in the last two games and being honest, Kiev never really looked like scoring apart from a half chance from close range. We looked solid at the back and the back four received plenty of protection throughout. We called upon, Begovic did well and took control of his area to clear the ball away from danger or to collect a cross into the box. It's another good sign.
3. Eden Hazard.
After a couple of weeks in the papers and on the sidelines at Chelsea, Eden Hazard looked like the Hazard of last season with the ball and it was noticeable that without it, he was more than happy to put in a shift of hard work tracking back defensively.
It's with the ball that we want to see Hazard getting back to his best and this evening on regular occasions he beat his man and looked like someone who's confidence is growing. He isn't quite there yet but tonight will do him good and the boss should be pleased with his performance and contribution.
4. Nemanja Matic.
Another who has found himself in the spotlight in recent weeks and another who has had to settle for a place on the bench of late, Matic was outstanding tonight.
Having the ever-willing Ramires next to him in the deeper position almost gave him a level of assurance that he could focus on what he had to do and we didn't find him having to work across the pitch tracking players or closing people down.
He won tackles, covered in behind our defenders when they were caught out of position and incredibly, dribbled his way through the Kiev midfield and defence and but for a flick just passed the post, could have scored an important goal which would have capped of a superb performance. That's the level we want to see him at week in, week out again.
5. Willian.
Without question our best player at the moment and the man on form. He was denied yet another goal from a free kick by the crossbar but once again shone in a Chelsea shirt.
His use of the ball is good. His willingness to track back and defend is something we all admire including the manager. His workrate is second to none but his use of the ball and willingness to move it quickly has become a key part of our game. You take Willian out of the side and we look totally different because Pedro is not doing it for us as yet as he settles into life at Chelsea.
Jose has said that no one is "untouchable" at the moment but if you ask me, Willian is as close as you could get to being so!
So there you have it. A much, much better performance tonight and my FIVE positives (from plenty) that we should take from tonight.
