Chelsea drew 2-2 with Swansea at Stamford Bridge yesterday and let's be honest, it wasn't good. If anything, Chelsea seem to be stuck in first gear and Jose Mourinho needs to wake these players up!
We have watched the Blues throughout pre-season and I have been disappointed despite the boss saying otherwise. It was almost like the players have been suffering from a hangover from last season. I know it was just pre season and the most important aspect is players fitness but to not win a single game is concerning.
So, we come to yesterday after almost a week to prepare and for some reason, whatever it is, the players seem to be stuck in the same situation, the same mind-set and it's frustrating.
Think back to the pre season and the beginning of the season a year ago and there is a massive difference. Our tails were up, we were playing well and scoring goals. We look 100% confident and together. Do you see that at the moment with Chelsea? I don't!
The alarming thing for me personally about yesterday was how pedestrian we looked at times at the back! Time and time again Shelvey picked the ball up in midfield and looked for a willing runner in behind and it caused us no end of problems.
Branislav Ivanovic had in my opinion, his worst game in a Chelsea shirt and was run ragged by the impressive Jefferson Montero. We could all see it happening over and over again and when he did win a tackle, he gave the ball away!
Too many players just didn't seem to get going or if they did it was in first gear. This is the Premier League, you cannot afford to carry anybody in the team because if you do, you are more than likely to be punished.
There are certain players who need to up their game and be up and ready to take the game by the throat like they did last season. We cannot afford for them to do it in patches of the game, it must be from the start so Chelsea can get a foothold to then dominate and dictate the tempo.
We just look really, really laboured at the moment. I know it's early and I know players are still trying to regain match fitness but these same players put NINE goals past this lot last season winning both games with ease.
There were however some positives from the game to consider. I like the fact that Oscar got off the mark for the season and Willian was involved in the second. That will give both players much needed confidence. Nemanja Matic had another solid game in the middle. As usual he worked his socks off.
As for the Courtois sending off, after watching it again, it's harsh. It's a 100% a penalty but Gary Cahill is getting round behind on the cover so it's not a clear cut goal scoring opportunity and should have been a yellow card at most.
Asmir Begovic did well after the initial penalty and that was good to see with Manchester City away being our next game. He will gain important confidence from the saves he made when called upon but again, the ease Swansea managed to get in behind our defence is a real concern!
Their equalizing goal at the time was a joke too. I can accept Gomis winning the header from the initial cross but for Ayew to have time and space to get up off of the floor after his first effort was blocked, to take the time to place the ball into the net with everyone on their arses on the floor is laughable really for the Champions!
Credit to Swansea for the way they played and the chances they created. They are a good side and stick to their principles which has served them well. I don't think they really get the credit they deserve after finishing eighth last season. I expect them to do better this year again and good luck to them!
Chelsea MUST lift themselves and wake themselves up to step out from the hangover they seem to be stuck inside. We have to get back to playing the exciting, flowing football that dominated the League for the first part last season.
City is a massive game now as a defeat would leave us with one point from six or a draw would leave us with just two from six which would be a disaster. Chelsea should be setting and dictating the pace of the title race, not chasing down others. If we don't sort ourselves out, that's what we could face this season!
What do you people think here? Am I going over the top about Chelsea with it being early in the season or do you agree with me.
