One story that broke on Monday Night despite the ridiculous Cesc Fabregas sending off at West Brom was the news that Raheem Sterling has decided to leave Liverpool.
This whole situation at Anfield has filled the back pages for months now after he has turned down £90,000 per week to sign a new contract. It's believed that he wants to move to a club that is challenging for league titles and trophies.
So to the reports that Jose Mourinho is contemplating selling as many as FIVE of our current first team squad to finance a move to sign Sterling in the summer. My initial thought at the headline was "bollocks!" then after reading the article it's clear that it's even worse than that! We will be linked with Lara Croft next it's that ridiculous!
Petr Cech, Filipe Luis, Oscar, Juan Cuadrado and Didier Drogba are the five names listed as potentially being sold and my own personal opinion is that if they are sold, they will be replaced by as many players and not just one - Raheem Sterling!
Only recently Jose Mourinho expressed his happiness with his current squad and stated that there will be little changes to his squad this summer. As we know that could change if players decide that they want to leave the club in search of regular first team football. If that happens, then each of them will be replaced to ensure we have the right balance.
So what of Sterling? Well it's obvious he has talent and lightening pace. Unfortunately, it seems as though someone has got in his ear and has advised him badly. How anyone his age with plenty of years ahead of him can afford to turn down £90,000 per week knowing you will almost certainly play week in, week out is beyond me. Surely this is the time for Sterling to realise that Liverpool will be rebuilding their team around someone like him and he has an important part to play there?
People have mentioned that he wants to come back to London where he grew up but I am sure that isn't a consideration and the deciding factor is money.
He WILL be an investment for whoever he signs for given his age but you have to worry about the people he has advising him at the moment. They are going to push and push for more and more money and he could end up costing someone a fortune over the length of his contract.
Do we think he would get into the Chelsea side now? It's difficult to answer on the one hand because of the goal threat he is with his pace. However, on the flip side you have to look at the defensive side of his game and I just don't see it enough. We know the manager demands that from his players and Sterling would need to pull his socks up and work hard if he was to force Willian out of the team.
It's a difficult one isn't it. He IS a goal threat, has blistering pace and would be someone who under Mourinho's guidance, could take his game to another level but I just question if he has had his head turned by money and he isn't thinking of the game first and his development.
Do not believe the report that Chelsea will sell FIVE to fund a move for Sterling but would you want Chelsea to sign him?
