Premier League champions Chelsea Football Club are currently in negotiations with Atletico Madrid to acquire star midfielder Koke. He is in great form this season and Chelsea believe that he is worth every penny of his exit contract of a whopping £44 million, which was signed merely a year ago.
In fact, the Blues are willing to pay top dollar to bolster their prospects in this year’s Champions League. However, the proposed deal will amount to £30 million since it involves swapping full-back Filipe Luis for Koke.
Jose Mourinho, the man of the moment, has big plans to beef up the team ahead of the upcoming season and Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is understood to be in agreement with him.
Koke will indeed be a good fit for the Blues and he comes with an impressive body of work having played more than 150 times with the current champions of La Liga. Chelsea will possibly make space for him by working out a deal with Real Madrid for Nigerian midfielder John Obi Mikel.
Besides, Brazilian Filipe Luis’ stint at Chelsea didn’t really work out for the best and his lacklustre performance means that he won’t be missed here.
Interestingly, Atletico seems to be quite keen to have him back at the Vincente Calderon. The rumours of the swap have been given credence by Chelsea executive Michael Emenaldo’s recent trip to Spain where he was said to have been studying Koke’s game.
The Madrid-born Koke, whose real name is Jorge Resurreccion Merodio, is all set to play an important role in Chelsea. As a matter of fact, Chelsea striker Diego Costa is looking forward to having him in the line-up for the season, having played alongside him in the Spanish national team.
His aggressive style of playing and ability to create opportunities for goals make him very valuable as an all rounded midfielder apart from the fact that his classy playing style makes him a delight to watch.
Mourinho has a few other acquisitions in mind once this deal falls into place. Inter Milan’s striker Mauro Icardi, with 22 goals scored this season, is also believed to be in Mourinho’s sights. The Argentine player is slated to replace Ivory Coast’s Didier Drogba whose contract comes to an end later this year.
Other players that he is believed to have plans for include Aaron Cresswell, the full-back from West Ham and the Queens Park Ranger goalkeeper Robert Green.
Chelsea fans currently have much to cheer about thanks to their team’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday to clinch the Premier League. It looks like the celebrations will continue in the coming season if all goes the way Mourinho intends.
