For the most part this season, Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic have been dominant in games and have played a HUGE part in our challenge for the Premier League title week in, week out.
Now you can handle when someone is not at their best as normally, the ten other players carry them until the manager decides to replace them. However, when BOTH of them or having bad games at the same time it causes us a real problem and that is exactly what happened yesterday.
Nemanja Matic.
Let's be honest, he hasn't been the same since he came back from injury in the last two games. He looks a yard short of pace and doesn't have the same influence on the game.
You only have to look at the game yesterday, especially in the first half, to see that Matic struggled to cope with Southampton. Normally you would see him covering that area in front of the back four, mopping things up and winning tackles. Yesterday, he could not get anywhere near them and Southampton found so much space in behind our midfield line.
His tackle on Mane was ridiculous and it didn't help that Ivanovic was caught out by pace. Trying to get back in and make a tackle, that moment proved to me that he was way off of his game.
Cesc Fabregas.
I would never ever dream of slating Cesc Fabregas because of the impact he has had at our club and because of the season he has had so far.
He is that good that he would know himself that his influence and performance wasn't good enough yesterday. He wouldn't need to be told by anyone else.
The crowd's instant reactions to when he gave the ball away, turned into trouble or lost ball wouldn't have helped and he also seemed a yard short in the game.
Chelsea look to Fabregas to orchestrate our attacking play. We look for him to dictate our game and to have a massive influence on our tempo. It was lacking against PSG and again yesterday and it hurt us.
He hardly ever has a bad game and it shocks us I guess when he does. Having Cesc have a bad game himself is bad enough but for him to have a shocker alongside Matic, we really, really struggled!
Let's hope yesterday was a one off!.
Fabregas has had more than one bad game, he's been missing since Christmas. Oscar seems to have suffered from not being a permanent fixture in the team so maybe it's time to give him a run alongside Matic. I'd still like to see a back four of Azpilicueta, Zouma, Terry and Luis which puts players in their favoured position defensively and also offers more of an attacking threat. I think Mourinho is the best in the world but what he sees in Ivanovich baffles me, we always look most vulnerable down the right side of our defence. Something needs to change and quick, it's all very well to say we gained a point over City but the reality is we dropped another two to Arsenal who are at the top of their game.
ReplyDeleteI keep on saying this but to finish strongly we need to combine width with defensive strength. Lets rotate Ivan and put Azi in his position, we can then bring on the wonderful Luiz, who must be getting really put off by not being picked on the left. Stick with Cahill as he is back to himself, but we need Zouma in the midfield. Put Coudrado on the wing, I thought he would win js the CL but has not been picked. This guy, with game time, can win us the PL.
ReplyDeleteOk so a few of our better players have had a dip in form,,,it happens to all teams at some stage in a season,,,,it,s how the manager sorts it that matters,,,,does Jose leave them out,,or keep them playing,,I prefer them playing,,and hope their form come,s back,,as quick as it went,,,plus who would we put in their place?????it,s ok to say that we should have kept, this player, that player,,,for whatever reason we did,nt,,,,we still have a good squad,,who have been top now for a long time,,,Jose was so right with regards to the media,,,they blow with the wind,,a few weeks back both Arsenal,,MU,,L,Pool,,,were a lost hope,,and the managers were getting stick from all and sundry,,,now a win against both a very//poor QPR@Spurs,,,sides,,,and they are back in the race,,,it,s the media we have now,,everywhere....also if it,s true that both Fab and Oscar were booed by our own fans,,,,whats that about,,players don,t go out on the pitch to have a bad game,,,,it,s just the way things pan out sometime,s,,,let,s all get behind the team,,and push on for another Prem Title......
