With the arrival of Thibaut Courtois at Chelsea this summer, there has been plenty of speculation over the futures of our men between the sticks. According to a report tonight, Petr Cech will discover that Courtois is the new number one and he is free to leave the club!
Goal.com have released an article tonight claiming the decision has been made and Mourinho will attempt to offload Petr Cech for a fee of around £10m with some big, big European heavyweights interested in the 32 year old.
Speaking a few weeks ago, Cech's agent Viktor Kolar said:
"I would get in touch with [Andoni] Zubizarreta at Barcelona and people at Real Madrid. These are clubs we would consider if Chelsea wanted to get rid of Petr.
We would also consider Bayern Munich but they have [Manuel] Neuer there. Then there are leagues Petr would not go to - Serie A, for instance, because clubs in that league have problems.
Paris Saint-Germain have shown interest and we have also communicated with Monaco."
I think if we are honest, the fact that Courtois has arrived at Stamford Bridge this summer with two years left on his current contract remaining, it's clear that Cech will find himself, for the first time in his Chelsea career, as our number two and it's certain that he will feel that he deserves to be number one even if that no longer means at Chelsea.
The whole situation with Courtois is and has been clear to me for a while now. If you think about it, Courtois was signed by Chelsea and loaned out to Madrid. He has spent three seasons there with no experience of playing in England so Chelsea could not afford to allow him another year away from West London.
For example, if Courtois remained at Atletico this season and came back this time next year, he would have a single year remaining and could quite easily decide to not sign a new Chelsea deal. If that happened Chelsea would be forced to sell one of the brightest talents in the game or face him leaving for nothing, so it makes perfect sense to bring him back and give him a full season as our number one before he is faced with that decision.
Whatever happens, Petr Cech along with Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard will go down in history as a key player in the most successful era of Chelsea's history and will be a legend at this club. Cech holds the record for the most clean sheets here ever and will always be remembered for his heroics in Munich.
As with anything, time goes on and it's seems that Chelsea's focus now is the new generation that we are looking to dominate for years to come and according to tonight's reports, that's with Courtois as number one!
