According to the press, Gary Cahill is about to be rewarded for his fantastic performances in recent seasons with a new four-year contract. If you ask me, that signing is just as important as Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa!
What a bargain Cahill has proven to be. Signed for just £7m in 2012, you look at him now and would value him at least three times that amount in the current market.
I know Eden Hazard won the Player of the Year award last season but in my eyes, Gary Cahill was right up there with him and deserves all the credit he receives.
Think of how many times we have seen Cahill make a last ditch tackle, a block and a clearance last season. Despite being dug out by some quarters of the England fans for the goals conceded in Brazil against Italy and Uruguay, you only have to think back to how many times he saved England with the same to realise that without him, England were in big, big trouble.
I have said it numerous times on here and I will say it again, Gary Cahill is old school and there are very little defenders of that mould left in the Premier League!
When I say old school, I am referring to their willingness to put quite literally everything on the line to stop goals going in the back of the net. You just look at his reactions and celebrations when a tackle is made, a block is made or if the Goalkeeper makes an unbelievable save to keep the attackers at bay, he lives for clean sheets.
It's also clear to see that Cahill has spent time learning from the best in John Terry ever since he has been here. His positioning is first rate, his reading of the game has improved immensely and I firmly believe that he will follow in the footsteps of John Terry and become Captain of our Football Club.
For any team looking to be successful, you need a solid base to build from. Gary Cahill has firmly cemented his place in the team under Jose Mourinho and without question, that has led to the sale of David Luiz to PSG.
A new contract is fantastic news for everyone at Chelsea and for the supporters. Let's hope Cahill goes on to have an even better season this time around.
Congratulations Gaz!
