Diego Costa officially signed a five-year deal with Chelsea yesterday and expressed his happiness at moving to West London. I have real concerns over his temperament and will explain here!
Let me start by saying that this post isn't about me slagging the bloke off before he has even kicked a ball for Chelsea. It's not about me being negative about him but just some real concerns I have about his temperament which is going to be tested week in, week out in the Premier League.
I have no doubts about his ability and have no doubts that he is a World Class finisher as he has proven himself in La Liga and in the UEFA Champions League. I truly believe that as long as he keeps his head, he could prove to be one of the signings of the season.
The beauty about Football is that is divides opinion and I am sure the majority of you will disagree with me here but at least let me explain why I have my reservations..
Costa comes here with a reputation of being "The Beast" and that's something that will be tested at every single Premier League game this season up and down the country. For someone with a reputation that he has, he is going to be marked man. There will be centre defenders looking for Costa and it will be interesting to see how he reacts.
Some people have told me that he can quite literally "bully" defenders and I love that, as long as it's within the rules of the game and we do not end up with a situation on our hands with him doing something stupid and being banned for game after game. That will be no use to us.
I want to show you some clips that concern me. If it's not the use of his head, it's the spitting into his hand and then throwing it at defenders. That's the real concern I have.
The first clip shows a real battle Costa had with Pepe and Sergio Ramos a couple of seasons ago. Taking both of them on, he held his own but the spitting is disgusting:
Moving on from that and as I said, Costa will be a marked man. He is big enough and strong enough to hold his own but he really, really has to keep his cool. He is likely to receive this kind of treatment in his first season and it will be more than interesting to see how he copes with it:
We have to be honest here. These are real concerns I have as we have seen in the World Cup not so long ago the use of his head in the Netherlands game.
However, If Costa can keep his head, calm it down and play within the rules of the game then as I have openly admitted in the beginning of this post, Chelsea will have a real star up front and someone who can score goals for fun being supported by Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard.
What do you people think here? Am I being over sensitive or are my concerns genuine?
