Frank Lampard is one player who never fails to step up to the media when times are "difficult". Always there to give his opinion, there to calm things down and to give a focused perspective, he did the same yesterday in the pre match press conference ahead of our crunch game against Steaua Bucharest tonight.
As usual this morning the focus of media attention is on Jose Mourinho and the fact he stood up and walked out of his press conference leaving Lampard to continue. As Blake has posted on here this morning, it's a sign of Mourinho of old!
However, Lampard took the opportunity to speak of Mourinho and was quick to reaffirm that everyone in the squad needs to buy into Mourinho's ideas because at the end of the day he's a winner!
He said:
“It can take two to three months for players to follow a new manager’s ideas. I really believe in the squad we have, the young players we have – and we have to take on board the new manager’s ideas.
I know he’s a winner. He’s shown that and not just at Chelsea. We need to bring that all together. It might be a matter of time in certain areas but we believe, in the squad, we can do big things.”Lampard is right isn't he. It's so easy right now to demand and expect immediate success and for Jose and the players to hit the ground running. I have openly admitted on here that I have done exactly that at times.
The problem these days is the expectation from supporters up and down the country. If you look at the six teams that Jose has stated are "Title contenders" then at some stage we have all become frustrated.
David Moyes is having a nightmare at United and the fans have already begun to turn on him with boos ringing out at Old Trafford after West Brom beat them at the weekend. In addition to West Brom, they have already lost to Liverpool and Manchester City.
Manuel Pellegrini has come to City, a team that rarely lost games under Mancini and has lost two games already this season. They lost at Cardiff followed by the 3-2 defeat at Villa this weekend. City fans are concerned.
Arsene Wenger came under all sorts of criticism after defeat in their opening game of the season from Gunners fans, but has managed to turn things round.
Brendan Rogers sits high up the table with Liverpool at the moment but has losing at home to Southampton wouldn't have been accepted and then League Cup defeat to United would have hurt them also.
Andre Villas-Boas at Tottenham hasn't had everything his own way suffering a league defeat at Arsenal and being lucky to have taken a point from Saturday against Chelsea.
All I am trying to do here is point out the fact that we need to remain patient at Chelsea. We have been too quick to criticise and to pull the trigger in the past.
Yes I agree the defeats to FC Basel and Everton were not acceptable but that's part and parcel in football these days!
We have to remember what Jose has said about changing the philosophy of the team and the players from playing a certain way. It will take time because if you think about it, we have played that way for ten years now.
We have changed our approach from being a strong powerful team to a team looking to play quick attacking football with flair.
I for one trust in Jose Mourinho even if I do not agree with some of his team selections. We're a few points off top and still right up there amongst the favourites to win the Champions League with bookmakers like Unibet. All is good.
Now that's not me sitting here writing this saying he got it wrong, it's just my own opinion on who should be playing. Every single one of us has an opinion and it's not a debate for what is right or wrong here.
Frank Lampard has asked everyone at the club, connected with the club and the supporters to believe in Mourinho because at the end of the day, he will know him better than most in that dressing room.
It's about time we all did!
