Danny Sturridge needs games doesn't he? We all know the ability he has but hardly ever see it really and when we do he gives us the kind of performance that he did against Manchester United in the League Cup that brings us joy in one moment but frustrates the life out of us for the most part!.
He claims that he would score 20 goals a season if he was given a chance by Chelsea and I just wonder what your opinion on that statement is.
What he actually said when asked if he could score 20 a season by starting more was:
"I'd hope so. It's always difficult to say I'd score 20 goals a season. But if any player's given a regular run then you'd hope that if they're playing at a top club and given opportunities to score goals they'd be able to do that. I do believe I'm a centre-forward, I do believe I'd be able to help the team win games. Whether I can do that by scoring goals, making assists, just being there, being a physical presence – whatever I can do to help the team win I'll try and do that.
I am not worrying about the situation at my club. I will get my opportunity at some stage and when I do have my opportunity I will show what I can do. It is difficult to judge me as a player and say my goalscoring record is this or that when I do not play regularly. Not playing regularly is the most difficult thing for anyone to handle."Chelsea are being linked with all sorts of names in the January transfer window to provide Fernando Torres with competition for places up front and I just wonder if the answer to RDM's problems with scoring goals up front is sitting right in front of him?
I think you all HAVE TO agree with me when I say that Sturridge WILL score goals wherever he plays based on his ability. He has proven it for half a season under AVB here and at Bolton on loan before that but for me it's the fact that these days he tries to over complicate things.
He shoots from ridiculous angles, is greedy and doesn't pick a pass to a team mate who is in a better position to score and that frustrates all of us. It's when he relies on his strikers instinct and keeps it simple that in my view he is most effective.
For instance, how many times did he try to take on shots from stupid angles against United or tried a stupid flick from six yards out and missed the ball totally?
The goal he did score was when his instinct took over. Watch here:
As you can see Sturridge was given an opportunity in an instant and his strikers instinct took over and he was on it like a flash and rounded the keeper and scored. He had little time to think about it and scored. Like I said he needs to just keep it simple and to not over complicate things.
So with West Brom coming up at the weekend after the Internationals this week, questions remain over Danny Sturridge. Is this the ideal time to play him and give Torres a rest?
What do you people think about Sturridge? Do you agree that with a regular start in the side this season, he would replicate his goalscoring exploits of the start of last season and fire 20 goals a season at Chelsea?
One thing is for sure, his record last season doesn't lie does it!
KTBFFH
Sturridge should be 1st choice. End of story
