Following on from my last post asking the question if we should deploy David Luiz as a sweeper as part of a back three, I want to move forward and think of how that could work within the frame work of a formation for Chelsea going forward without John Terry.
Now by playing three at the back, it opens up a number of possibilities and questions but I believe in the 5&5 formation I am about to show you here.
I have decided that with Ashley Cole also being injured that we should get rid of playing full backs for the time being and use the extra man to bring Marko Marin into the side.
Here is how my proposed formation looks for the game against West Brom:
As you can see, Luiz would come in to play as a sweeper with Cahill and Ivanovic man marking either side of him. I wouldn't say that they are to play narrow but without the ball it's important to remain compact to force teams into playing the ball wide.
Mikel and Ramires would remain sitting in front of our back line and would have the freedom to move out wide to close people down in defensive areas knowing that we would have enough cover in the middle.
This is where the formation becomes exciting for me. As we all know, we currently play MAZACAR rotating positions throughout the duration of a game. At times we will see Juan Mata start out wide and then come into the middle. In this formation the introduction of Marko Marin on either wing would bring Mata inside to create and craft as he has been doing but alongside Oscar.
Eden Hazard and Marko Marin would be the two that would interchange positions of our attacking four and the fifth member of our attack would be Torres or Sturridge.
Obviously, looking at the formation we could be vulnerable wide in defensive areas but surely by pushing these four attacking midfielders forward, the opposition would have no choice but to bring players back to cover our front five?
What do you think? Is there something in this for RDM to think about?

No. No no no no no.
ReplyDeleteThe idea of playing 3 at the back isn't great, especially given our defensive frailities.
Also, the injury to Cole gives great chance for young Bert to show he's class, and ready to start matches for a big team like Chelsea.
So I'm alright with 4-2-3-1, and Marin just needs to play harder and show RDM that he can play fancy football. And our defence just needs to be more disciplined.
Hell no. A lot of goals we've conceded have come from out wide, playing even narrower would be suicide. If Marin wants in the team he can just work harder, if he is good enough to play RDM will play him. Its a long season, the tactics are fine.. Maybe pushing Luiz into midfield and keeping Ivanovic at cb next to Cahill will be the answer, look much more solid with them two playing. Comment from Aryaan is spot on really.
ReplyDeleteThis formation would be SUICIDAL bcos: 1) No Width! Cos Marin a right-footed player would have to cut-in, can't cross with left. Hazard naturally makes his run into the box & not to the by-line. Hence 2) Crowded midfield which will be inhibiting their play e.g. Vertical run by Ramires. 3) Total absence of defensiveness out wide! We are currently weak even with the fullbacks present simply because the wide men "can't" track back. Now imagine when its only Marin & Eden outwide! This leads to no. 4) commonly with 3 defenders, "Wing-backs" are used who are solid defensively but who are also effective as wingers & can send good crosses into the box! 5) its a WASTE to play 3 defenders against just 1 striker which is what teams commonly deploy these days. Usually 2 is enough (6) you don't just change to such formations overnight! Even Mancini that used it occasionally last season, & who has more players suited for the role still have problems with it.
ReplyDeleteBetter with four defenders and one defensive midfielder then. And marin swap sides with Hazard. Altough we dont have a solo defensive midfielder. But we have a defender who can do that job alone gues WHO....... Luiz cuz he can cover more ground. Essien some years ago could also do it.
ReplyDeleteGood idea, thats worht trying, at least this weekend, but my fear is that RDM is too timid this days to take risk. The same players all the time, the same substitution all the time, please where is the rotation policy?
ReplyDeleteyes, its worth trying, at least this weekend, but RDM is too timid to take risk; the same players, the same substitution, where is the suprise element that makes coaches thick?
ReplyDeleteMore so, the rotational policy?
This looks exciting! Most people think we're vurnable defensivly.. Do we know any other teams who play with this formation? Juventus! They went on a what..? 54 undefeated run? Solid at the back. Chelsea could be too!
ReplyDeletethis is great, i hope RDM can try dis
