This season, I am going to have a look more at the tactical side of things on here now that I have added a team of bloggers to my website. I have the time to do so and I believe it's an important aspect that is overlooked by most websites out there.
Chelsea have been conceding goals this season and it's a worrying sign. It's all well and good charging forward but we need to ensure we remain solid at the back.
Already this season, I have pointed out the mistakes that we had made during the Super Cup in Monaco so if you missed them before, make sure you check that particular analysis out.
For today, I want to concentrate on Juventus' second goal we conceded last night. John Obi Mikel is being slated for giving the ball away and for the mistake that led to the goal but I would like to show you that even after that happened, we still had a chance to stop the chance from being created but never did. Let's have a look at the moment Mikel is about to give the ball away:
As you can see Frank Lampard has got back alongside the defensive line to cover when the attack has broken down. Mikel has the ball, sees Hazard's run and is about the play the ball to him. JT has broken out from the back to initially put pressure on Juventus and to get the back line pushed up but look, David Luiz and Ivanovic haven't followed him and remain marking their men.
We pick up the play just after Mikel has given the ball away. Lamps is pushing forward into midfield again, JT is on his way back into defence and Mikel is standing still. In front of the two of them Juventus have three players around Oscar in midfield and we are badly outnumbered. However, the ball is about to be played backwards so Chelsea have time to push forward and press the ball. (Keep you eye on Ashley Cole, Luiz and Ivanovic. ALL of them are man marking.
The ball has played backwards and then forward to one of Juventus' two men in midfield, this time goal side of Oscar. Notice that Mikel who is still standing still shaking his head after the giving the ball away, and Lampard haven't pushed forward and pressed Juventus. Ivanovic's man has made a move wide and taken him with him. Vucinic has made a move towards the ball and has taken Luiz with him and JT now back in position has the eventual goal scorer in between him and Ashley Cole.
Look and Mikel and Lampard here. Both of them still haven't made any move forward to press the ball. I have indicated where exactly they should be. Luiz has done however and has taken the option of passing the ball to Vucinic away. JT has seen his man make a run and has gambled on him being caught offside, just as he sees the ball about the played.
The movement of Juventus' front three compared to Chelsea's lack of movement is superb and has caught us out.
The ball is played through into the hole created by Ivanovic going with his man wide, Luiz getting sucked out towards the ball, JT taking a chance of the attacker being caught offside. Mikel and Lampard remain in the same positions all throughout this passage of play and have given the Juventus midfielder time and space to pick his pass.
This could have all been avoided if we pushed up and pressed forward as soon as the ball went backwards. yes we gave the ball away but still had a chance to get into the right defensive positions.
It's a sloppy goal to concede as far a Chelsea are concerned but for Juventus, a classic move that pays off by utilising ALL THREE forwards to create space.
