Chelsea and some of their players in their adidas football kits are taking huge amounts of stick since the final whistle blew last night after letting a two goal lead slip against Juventus at Stamford Bridge. Now whether that's right or wrong is up or debate with everyone entitled to their own opinions. However, I believe that at the moment, in certain games, Chelsea are creating their own problems.
Last night it was there for all to see as Juventus took a foothold in the game and Chelsea looked uneasy with the system they were playing with. The likes of Frank Lampard and John Obi Mikel became overrun and I found myself asking the same question over and over again.
However, that was with the ball. Without the ball, Juventus dropped their wing backs into defensive areas to make a five across their back line and the three midfielders dropped deeper negating the space and especially in the second half, swung the game their way.
So in light of all this qoing on with Juventus, why didn't we look to counter their shape and change ours, especially in midfield to give them something to think about. Now using Football Formations I will show you what I am talking about and in reference to the game last night.
This is how both sides lined up at the start of the game. Chelsea's 4-2-3-1 formation compared to Juventus's 3-5-2 formation. Straight away we can see that Frank Lampard and Mikel would need Oscar's help in the middle of the pitch in order to not become over run.
Torres up against three centre backs and the same three Italian defenders that STARTED for Italy in the same positions in Euro 2012 was always going to be up against it.
Hazard and Ramires would have a job to do with both wing backs. As Chelsea pushed forward in the second half, both of them struggled to get beyond them as both wing backs played deeper so as a result, Chelsea struggled to break them down again.
The attacking two up front was always going to keep three of our back four busy at all times and like I said, if the midfield two either side of Pirlo were able to get ahead or goal side of our midfield, it was always going to cause us problems.
So why didn't RDM make a tactical change in the second half to counter their formation. Their tails were up after scoring the goal in the first half and it became obvious that Chelsea had retreated into the same defensive positions as we had in the Champions League last season. (This led to the mistakes I have pointed out for their second goal last night.)
Chelsea have no "Plan B" at the moment, the ability to switch tactical formation to counter act what the opposition are doing. People won't like me saying so, but it's a reminder once more of just how adapt Jose Mourinho was in doing so during games.
It's my view that Chelsea should have made a change to the following formation purely and simply to give Juventus something to think about.
A simple switch to the 4-3-3 formation would have solved alot of Chelsea's problems in TWO key areas. Firstly, by moving Ramires inside next to Mikel and Lampard, Chelsea would have gone like for like against Juventus' midfield three and cut out the space they continued to find themselves in. Chelsea would have been able to press further forward and our backline forward.
Secondly, by pushing Hazard and Oscar up next to Torres and either side of him would have meant that all three of their centre backs would have had to man mark and in effect, forcing at least one of their wing backs to sit in the defensive line.
As a result of that happening, Juventus' midfield three would be forced into moving across to cover the space left by the wing back not being there when Chelsea are attacking and either Cole or Ivanovic would have been able to get into the game further forward causing them additional problems.
Looking at RDM's substitutions last night, Mata could have come on in this formation for Ramires and played inside. Rather than Bertrand, he could have taken Oscar off after his knock on the ankle and replaced him with Victor Moses and his pace to play to the right of Torres and Hazard on the left.
I am behind our manager and the team 100% and believe that we will get things right even if it does take some time.
I am not here to criticise players at all because at the end of the day, they are asked to play a certain way and perform a certain role but if we had only made the decision to revert to a "Plan B" I am confident that we could have taken a good three points and not just the one last night.
It's just my own personal view but would like to hear ALL your opinions. What do you think about our lack of a "Plan B" and do you agree that a change to the formation above could have swung the game back in our favour?

Why doesn't RDM change our tactics/our shape?Just as Napoli before them, Juventus came to the Bridge with the intention of sticking to their own trusted formation including three centre backs, wing backs wide down both flanks up and down and two solid banks of three through the midfield and into the forward line.
However, that was with the ball. Without the ball, Juventus dropped their wing backs into defensive areas to make a five across their back line and the three midfielders dropped deeper negating the space and especially in the second half, swung the game their way.

I agree with u totally on d need for plan "B" in our games. I also noticed that most CFC bloggers are cautious of criticizing the team (players and managers) for fear of abuse or criticizing from some fans. I think we will not be doing d team a favour if we do not criticize them (constructively).
ReplyDeleteRDM has failed to realize and utilize the talents he has so far and I think it's not fair on d Club owner that send so much to bring in d talents and also for we d fans.
I seriously hope for improvements.
And pls, must Lampard start all d games considering his age and d fact that we have a Terry who has also lost seed just behind him? Just asking though.
Torres is so unreliable. RDM shld wake up & knw who 2 change when. Else I see him bcoming 1st 2 see d sack in d EPL dis season.. Up Chelsea!
