Saturday night, on that pitch in Munich and without John Terry there the focus of leadership will turn to Frank Lampard. Chelsea have plenty of leaders on the pitch but there will be only one wearing the armband, one voice above everyone else's the man the others will look to.
You see, Lampard has been there and done that as far as his experience goes and once again on the biggest stage of all, he has a chance to put right the wrongs of Moscow.
Lampard had a good game that night and came within centimetres of scoring a second that could have won us the trophy for the first time in our history.
Frank Lampard knows more than anyone, and for this group of players in particular, runners up again isn't good enough.
I wrote a post after the FA CUP final win over Liverpool about Lampard and how he has been given a new lease of life in a different position. It's all down to the guidance and management of Robbie Di Matteo but it seems to have gone un-noticed in the press and the media which is difficult to believe.
Lampard has now playing a withdrawn role as part of two midfielders holding their positions to allow a three man attacking midfield playing up behind the main striker and Lampard has flourished. His work rate without the ball is fantastic and he has become someone looking to create chances.
We don't see as many late runs into the box from Frank as we used to, but his influence on games and in the really big games recently, has been immense. Think of Barcelona away. The only time Frank made a run forward was to receive the pass from Ramires and then to play him in for his goal. Think of the FA CUP final. Lampard's ball into Drogba for our second goal. Both played from his deeper position.
Bastien Schweinsteiger spoke of coming up against Lampard on Saturday recently and said:
"It's possible I will be in direct confrontation again with Lampard on the pitch on Saturday and I have huge respect for him. Everything he does in the game has an effective use, it's always thought through. He's similar to Xabi Alonso [in that] he plays with his eyes."(Source)
I have written posts earlier today focusing on the message that Di Matteo has given to his players about how hard it is to reach one of these finals let alone being given another chance and also the determination of David Luiz to play in the final of his dreams.
In Frank Lampard on Saturday, Chelsea will have someone who has defied the critics throughout his career, someone who after he does finish playing, will be remembered as a remarkable goal scorer from midfield and someone who has won everything in our game domestically and now knows after Moscow what it would take to go that one step further to win it.
You would be hard pushed to find someone who will give more than Frank to help Chelsea achieve their goal in Munich. Without question, Chelsea need another big performance from Frank on the biggest European stage of all and I have no doubts that Frank Lampard in his new position, will give us that on Saturday night!
