I wrote a post last week about Roberto Di Matteo and the influence he has had on our dressing room since he took over as manager at the club and also about the crap that appeared in the press from Torres' agent stating that they will consider his future at the end of the season.
I explained that Di Matteo has done an amazing job especially winning over the dressing room and getting all the players to play for him and each other once again. I also explained that the Torres reports were rubbish and pointed out the fact that his representatives have spoken of how happy he is now at the club and reports of him leaving are ridiculous.
On Saturday as we all know Fernando Torres scored this goal:
It was a great strike from a flowing Chelsea counter attack with believe it or not Danny Sturridge the architect. I can't help but wonder that if the Chelsea players have been giving him this level of service throughout the season, where we would and could be?.
Remember when AVB took over at Chelsea back in the Summer and when asked about Torres and his poor record at the time having only scored one goal?. AVB responded by saying that he would "fine tune the team as a whole" to provide goals for everyone more or less.
Considering we have lost only one out of the last eight games in all competitions under RDM, could it be that he has delivered or is starting to deliver what AVB said HE would do all those months ago and Torres will finally be given the service I have been crying out for ever since he signed?.
I cannot under estimate that as a player knowing you have the full confidence of everyone around you is massive. Knowing that people believe in you and are right behind you 100% at the club has given Fernando Torres a feeling of being settled finally and we are all beginning to see exactly what we used to when he first came to this country. Don't get me wrong as Torres will also know, there is still a way to go but he is now well on the way.
Have a look at these videos below. These are Torres' performances from some games ever since RDM took over compared to his last performance for AVB. You'll notice a difference - CONFIDENCE.
Torres v West Brom (AVB's last game - we lost 1-0)
Torres v Leicester (Chelsea won 5-2)
Torres v City (Chelsea lost 2-1)
Torres v Benfica (Chelsea won 1-0)
Torres has received praise from all quarters for his performances. His work rate is astounding, he has become so much more involved now with people looking to play the ball into him. He is creating goals in addition to now scoring again.
It all comes down to confidence. I am sure he has 100% confidence in his own ability but confidence is also about knowing that your team mates will provide for you and let's be honest I am not totally convinced he ever thought that was the case. Under RDM it's now different and you can see Torres playing with the confidence in everything about his game. This is a massive step.
Let's hope Torres' run of form continues until the end of the season and beyond. The thing is, we all know he will work his socks off week in, week out and that's why we all love him.
I believe things will only get better and better for Fernando Torres and for Chelsea!
