Gary Cahill made his long awaited debut for Chelsea against United last Sunday and I thought he did well and looked calm and composed. OK there is an argument that he was part of a defence that conceded three goals but two of them were penalties and you he is in no way at fault for the Hernandez header.
He spoke to the press after the game about his debut and the fact we had thrown away a three goal lead and said:
"It was a fantastic game to be involved in and it was in at the deep end but these are the games you want to be involved in, however any game you go 3-0 up you expect to win so that has put a dampener on my debut.(Source)
It is a sickening feeling like we have lost the game. The mood is a bit flat and we are disappointed.
The second half we started fantastically well and went 3-0 up and really should have seen the game off from there, but the second penalty was disappointing.
The first one was probably a penalty but the second one was right in front of me and I didn't think it was a penalty at the time and seeing the replay I haven't changed my mind, so that went against us at a crucial part of the game."
I mean, what an introduction to life at Chelsea and again , I thought he handled it really well. He looks taller than I imagined and also quicker across the pitch which is a bonus for us.
If you think about the move from Bolton to Chelsea it must be hard for him personally also because he knows that people would judge him based on how well Bolton are doing and have done in the league since he has been playing there. No disrespect is meant to Bolton at all why I say that but to make the step up another level to be playing for a side that should be top four at least and fighting for the title, it's much different than what he would be used to.
I personally think he did well in the game and has set himself a good base to work from and improve now week in, week out. For £7m, Chelsea have got themselves a real bargain.
