Well Florent Malouda is doing his best to keep in favour with the manager isn't he!. After reports of AVB's cull at the club of the older players coming to the end of their contracts, Florent Malouda has spoken of the situation here and that fact that we should be winning things year in, year out.
He said:
'I don’t like this expression of transition. When you play for Chelsea there is no transition because everyone expects the best from the squad we’ve got. There is a lot of talent and ambition.(Source)
When you sign for the club, it doesn’t matter who the players or manager are, all you expect is to win trophies. There is a mentality here. I think that’s what the fans expect from us as well. We should not look at all the changes as an excuse, we must contend to win trophies year after year.
The newer players have settled very well in the team. Everyone is focused on the club objectives and are sad when we don’t have the results we expect.
We’re always trying to turn things around and we know how fast things can change. We know when we don’t have results, doubts are coming from the outside so we have to stay strong as a squad to be able to compete for trophies. We have to go for it.
The thing is, and let's be honest, Malouda is only in the side because Danny Sturridge isn't playing. Malouda has fallen down the pecking order at the club and simply cannot expect to command a start here anymore based on the impact Juan Mata AND Sturridge have had this season.
I posted a rant at Malouda the other day after he was "moaning" about not being in the side. It seems that between then and now something has happened as he now has a different approach to things. Speaking of being on the bench he also added:
'I will never be happy to be on the bench. It is a competition, but I know what I can do when I am at my best level.
I have helped the team win trophies and that is what I’m looking for. I will never be happy to play a few minutes sometimes.
Am I ready to fight for my place? Of course. That’s my character. The manager knows that. When you look at the number of games I have played for the club and my former clubs, I have always been in the starting XI. This season was a bit different for me but I am looking forward to changing that.'
So at least he seems to have changed his tune and wants to get his head down and work hard to earn a place in the side. To his credit he has done OK when he has been involved lately, but we still are a long way from seeing the Florent Malouda that featured in our double winning season two years ago!.
Getting back to the basis of this blog post and Malouda is spot on!. It shouldn't matter now who the manager is, it shouldn't matter who the players are, we are a club that expects silverware at the end of EVERY season now and it's because of that we have seen the likes of Mourinho, Grant, Scolari and Ancelotti leave the club. Jose and Carlo both won trophies but it was the season they didn't that hurt the club. That's what the staff here at up against, the burden of expectation.
Maybe looking at it from another point of view, it could be a dig at AVB but I can't see it. Not at the moment anyway.
The good thing for us at the moment is that everyone seems to be beating everyone and no one is running away with the League. We are 11 points behind in the title race, but anything can happen.
If we can get on a run then who knows where it can take us because as Malouda says, we have the winning mentality at the club and that can pull you through.
The simple fact remains that come the end of the season and just like Malouda says, there should be no excuses for a club like to Chelsea to win nothing in a season.
