Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola featured on Skysports' Goals on Sunday programme yesterday after sitting in the stands for Chelsea v Sunderland at the Bridge. He was asked for his opinion with the situation with Fernando Torres and his lack of goals at Chelsea. Zola was impressed with Torres but felt that he finds himself out of position far too often and it's costing him.
He said:
"I was pleased with Torres - he played very well.(Source)
Sometimes I think he makes it difficult for himself, though, because he gets out of the danger zone so many times.
He tries to find space on the left or the right when he should be more in the middle where he could get more goals. I think that is what is causing the problems.
He pulls away from the danger zone, he doesn't score goals and his confidence goes down. It is a pity because you can see the potential is there."
Zola is spot on about Torres but the only thing I want to say in response to his opinion is that there is a reason that Torres drifts out wide and drops deeper, it's because he comes looking for the ball.
I am sure I have said this time and time again on here but in my opinion there is a major difference to the Fernando Torres at Chelsea to his time at Liverpool. For example, at Liverpool he knew that as soon as the midfield and Steven Gerrard in particular picked up the ball, Torres would be up on the shoulder of the last defender and will make a run knowing he would be played the ball in behind.
At Chelsea, he knows that his first run in behind is more or less ignored or Chelsea's build up play is far slower than he was used to at Liverpool. As a result he drops deeper to receive the ball and immediately has a player up his arse!. Same thing with moving out wide, it's to get possession of the ball.
There is a solution to all this. Ask the midfielders when in possession of the ball to lift their heads up and look for Torres first time and to keep Torres playing within the width of the penalty box, we don't want to see him out wide or dropping deep.
I cannot believe that Torres has been here nearly a year now and we still aren't playing to his strengths. I honestly, hand on heart believe that if we did, Torres would score goals for fun here and god only knows how far his goals could take us!.
