Now that was the performance we wanted after a nervy week at Chelsea. We all knew that the next 9 days could define our season even at this early stage but we desperately needed a win. Newcastle away, especially this season is always a difficult game as I said in my match preview.
We got the win and I have to say, playing better than we have in recent weeks. OK there is the Luiz tackle early doors and being honest I don't think any of us expected the Referee to only brandish a yellow, he did and we accept his decision.
I thought after that moment, we regrouped and Luiz pulled himself together and had a decent game. John Terry was immense at the back, he really was. People have questioned his form and even his inclusion and this was a performance from him that reminded us all exactly how commanding he can be.
Newcastle hit the cross bar and post three times and Cech made a couple of good saves but compared to the chances we created (especially Danny Sturridge)Chelsea really deserved the win. While John Terry was commanding at the back, Oriol Romeu was winning tackles and playing his passes and Juan Mata was roaming all over the pitch causing endless problems for Newcastle.
Didier Drogba was included in the side ahead of Fernando Torres and apart from his goal and a couple of defensive headers didn't do much at all. When Torres came on he made a couple of good runs but still look short on confidence which is something that will come with playing time.
Drogba's goal was a vintage header from Drogba after great work for Mata. Torres with a chance to score himself ended up playing the ball square to Kalou who with some luck, found the bottom corner of the net and Sturridge finally took his chance when he cut inside the defender onto his left foot and drilled the ball into the bottom corner of the net. (Check out the goals here)
We won three nil but it was all about the performance for me. We started to look like the Chelsea of old. Imposing ourselves on the opposition, getting our defence right and thank god that high line was done away with.
Time and time again we looked dangerous on the break and being honest we could have been three or four nil up at half time.
It was a big big performance from some of Chelsea's big names when we needed it. However, it was only part one of three in a massive week for the club. Our next step is Valencia on Tuesday and if we play like we did against Newcastle, I can see us scoring a couple.
For now, I'll settle for the big performance and three points we got on Saturday. It's about time lads and well done!
