There are no excuses as far as I am concerned with the result last night. It's two points dropped, another stupid goal conceded and plenty of missed opportunities for Chelsea last night and the result isn't acceptable really is it!.
It doesn't matter what side we put out on that pitch last night, we have the quality to have got the job done but time and time again we allowed Genk time and space on the ball it cost us.
At times Chelsea were too slow, too laboured and took too many touches in possession. As a result of this, Fernando Torres was forced to drop deeper to come and get the ball, his runs were once again ignored.
Anelka and Malouda didn't track back quick enough when we didn't have the ball and left our full backs exposed so Meireles and Ramires at times were being sucked out of position in wide areas and Genk caused us problems.
When we did have the ball in the final third, again it was too slow. Too many touches and no incisive passes to open up their back four. When we did eventually play that way, Sturridge squared to Lampard who tried to open his body up and flick the ball into the net and missed, and Malouda flicked the ball over the keeper towards goal only for two of their defenders to get in a right old mess and nearly score on OG. It was all too little too late.
Our goal WAS quality though. The impressive Ramires once again on the score sheet after a neat one-two with Torres who's flick you have to say back into Ramires' run was different class also. Ramires was allowed time to compose himself, to let the ball come down from waist height and drilled it under the keeper into the corner of the net.
Another player who impressed me was Meireles. I thought he would have a good game and his cracking effort from 25 yards off the crossbar when it looked like it was in, was the shot of the game. His passing (especially a reverse pass to Malouda in the first half) was quality, along with Romeu who started dodgy but then grew into the game.
AVB spoke of Chelsea being more clinical and ruthless and sorry to say it, there was no sign of it last night and it did cost us again.
I will never know David Luiz took that penalty last night. Maybe it was something that had been arranged pre game but for me unless Fernando Torres has a thing about penalties, he should be stepping up and taking it. Saying that, it wasn't the worse penalty and the keeper did well to guess the right way and make the save.
The Genk goal annoyed me because again we were getting caught in defensive areas with players out of position. For some reason, Nico Anelka was playing through the middle and Torres out wide right when Genk came forward with the ball. Their man stepped inside Torres and went passed him with ease, Then Bosingwa was caught again out of position as some quick passing released a man with plenty of time and space near the byline wide right to pick a pass to their front man who unmarked, strolled onto the ball and scored albeit with a slight deflection of Cole's leg that beat Cech. Shambles!
Games like last night really frustrate me because after getting the goal, we should have settled into our football, started to play the way AVB wants us to and to move the ball quickly. It never happened, too many passes went astray and we found ourselves at times playing too many sideways passes again. It was like watching last season.
No matter how much you try and make it sound better this morning, it isn't. It's a shocker of a result really and not the preparation we wanted for Blackburn this Saturday. Expect the press and the media to go to town on Chelsea once more and quite rightly so.
We need to be back in our rhythm as soon as possible and playing much much better than this.
