Like I said in a previous post, I got out my 2004/5 season DVD last night to cheer myself up and watch a Chelsea side that new how to defend. On the bonus DVD there is an interview with Jose Mourinho at the end of that season, looking back at some of the headlines and comments from the press also.
One particular moment in that interview struck a chord with me when Chelsea TV's Gigi Salmon asked him about the negative press the side was getting for winning games 1-0 and not having a lot of flair. He answered by saying that when you come to club it's important to build on the sides mentality, then the defensive shape and set up and once that is right, build from there.
The reason I am saying this and bringing up this old quote from Mourinho isn't because I am harping on back to the old days and want him to come back or that I am comparing his side to AVB's team now. The reason I am referring back to his quote is because it's apparent now more than ever as we look to do something to get ourselves out of our defensive slump.
AVB simply has to strip everything back to the bare bones and start again as far as our defensive shape is concerned. It's now so so important that we address our frailties sooner rather than later because if we leave it too late, we could be faced with the nightmare of Europa League football!!.
In my opinion AVB has to work on the defensive shape of the side. He must decide on a back four for the next couple of weeks and stick with them. None of this constant rotation as it doesn't help the organisation of our defensive line. After watching yesterday, Alex needs to come back in next to JT.
The question also remains whether we stick with the 4-3-3 or change to 4-2-3-1 with two holding midfielders to protect our centre backs.
Right now I think all of us will accept winning games 1-0 playing boring just so we can get back on a run of results again. We need to establish a solid defensive foundation first and then build on that.
Stamford Bridge used to be a place sides used to fear coming to. They used to "park the bus" but not anymore. If anything, sides now looking forward to coming here and taking the game to us.
This simply has got to stop now before it gets even worse and take it from me, it will!
Defend first AVB.
