Andre Villas-Boas has always stated that he wants his players to express themselves, find gaps in the their defence in between the lines and exploit them. Juan Mata spoke of AVB's attacking approach he wanted to implement at Chelsea and Bolton was THE game where everything went right as we got the ball forward.
Frank Lampard spoke after the Bolton game and revealed the difference after a few weeks of playing together has made and said:
"We are trying to show what we are about in training and when a new manager comes in, sometimes it can take time for his effect on the training ground to carry on over onto the pitch.(Source)
There were a lot of times when we had some 'okay' performances early in the season - Manchester United, Valencia, for example. And we have played a lot of games where we have created a lot of chances and not finished them off which takes the gloss off a result sometimes.
I think there have been a lot of signs of our developing understanding in recent games but Bolton was the day where we put it together as the finished article.
Everything happened for us from the start. You saw the brand of football that we played - the passing and movement and quality throughout the team - and that is what we are working towards.
We moved the ball and passed the ball and passed the team to death. On top of that, we have created a lot of chances and taken them. We need to keep doing that."
I posted yesterday about AVB delivering on his promise of fine tuning the team and like Lampard says, Bolton was the perfect example.
In yesterdays post I was focusing on players and how different players have had a major influence in different games but haven't really focused on the team as a whole.
Yes we still need to stop conceding goals but again if Terry hadn't been forced to the ground for the Bolton goal, I still think he would have cleared the ball. However, it is an area I am sure AVB is looking at.
The overall impression I got from the game on Sunday was how quickly we moved the ball forward and attacked Bolton especially in the first half. For so long we have seen Chelsea's laboured approach and look like they never get out of second gear which is really frustrating for all of us as we know how good we can be when we play at pace.
It's during the last few games that we have seen Chelsea step up a level and really get at teams and without taking all the chances we created. United and Valencia were two games where all we lacked was the finished product and Bolton it all came together.
I hate that it's now an international break as Chelsea had gained some real momentum. AVB will be quick to get his Chelsea side back into full swing in training as early as possible ahead of the Everton game and a side we have struggled against last season.
Let's see how we do this term against them!. I can't wait!
