I posted the other day about Bayern Munich monitoring the situation with Didier Drogba at Chelsea and negotiations about a new deal. I wondered at the time whether or not Drogba would seek one last payday elsewhere from Chelsea.
It's rumoured that Drogba wants assurances that he will start alot more games than he has this season if he was going to sign a new deal. AVB has reiterated that age doesn't matter and Drogba is a key player for Chelsea.
The problem being, Chelsea's stance on longer term contracts for ageing players. Again rumoured, Drogba wants a two year deal and Chelsea only apparently willing to offer a one year deal.
So it comes as no surprise that we heard reports yesterday that talks over a new deal have been put on hold. The Times reported this yesterday, leaving Drogba free to talk to anyone interested in his services in January in relation to signing on a free transfer.
The problem is, as is always the case, when players contracts are running down into their final year we read all sorts of speculation for literally the duration of the season. You have as much chance of predicting exactly what is going to happen at the moment as picking a lucky number on some online bingo games.
The more I think about it, the more I am beginning to personally feel that this could be the last season Drogba has here. Times are moving on and there is no doubt that Didier Drogba will always go down in our history as one of our greatest players and a legend at that.
However, we have to face the harsh reality of football. Football never stands still and while someone approaches the twilight of their career, some ones starts and with Danny Sturridge, Fernando Torres and Romelu Lukaku already here, the Chelsea board may feel as though the time is right to bring in someone else and let him go with a heavy heart.
I really hope Drogba can inspire us all for the remainder of this season and play a huge part in hopefully what turns out to be a successful season. By then, we will know what will happen to Drogba.
