After watching his two performances for Chelsea this season where he has started and played the full games, I think we have all realised that we have found an absolute gem in Oriol Romeu. Brave enough to leave Barcelona and come over here when he realised that life would be difficult with Mascherano and Busquets ahead of him, he has really made a big impression here in just two games.
After a really impressive performance against Genk, Oriol said:
"I'm proud to play my first game in the Champions League, Obviously, it's a dream for me to play with these players, with this team. I need to keep working, to keep training well, and then the chance will arrive.(source)
It's a dream for me. I am a young player and to play with these players, I learn a lot."
I was reading an article published in the Daily Mail about him, comparing him to the one and only Claude Makelele and quite rightly so in my opinion.
He has the defensive instinct to be a holding player but with a difference. Makelele was all about breaking up the oppositions possession and giving the ball to other players to go and get on with it. Mikel, who I really rate, is similar to Makelele but never as affective defensively. I think the argument that people have about Mikel is the fact that he plays too slow and there are too many balls played sidewards. Romeu is from a different mould altogether.
Romeu's performance was different class and so good in my opinion that he should be seriously considered to be starting Premier League games now. The article in the Daily Mail poses the question of just how Romeu would cope with playing at Loftus Road against the likes of Joey Barton on Sunday?. I believe he would deal with it all with absolute ease.
Maybe it's because he's from Barcelona and there are people that will believe that this is the case, the composure he has on the pitch, his positional sense and his ability to pick a pass quickly and then look to get into space to receive the ball back, provides us with a very different option in the middle of the park.
I cannot help but fear the fact that he could only be with us for a season after Barcelona insisted on a buy back clause of £9m at the end of this, or £13m at the end of next season indicates to me that he will go back there.
So the question I am asking you the Chelsea/Football fan reading this right now is:
Just how good is Oriol Romeu and should he be playing each week?

No, playing him regularly will make him even better and considering his buy-back clause, Barca would easily see how good he is.
