I cannot remember if I have ever come away from a defeat feeling as positive as I did yesterday. I think to be fair based on the chances we created we should have got a draw there at least but credit United, you took the chances you had (apart from the penalty) and won the game.
I could be like United fan's were a couple of seasons ago and start bleating on saying "the goals were offside" but I am not going to bother. They weren't given offside and due to a lack of concentration from Frank Lampard losing his marker for Smalling to score, Nani's wonder strike where I felt as though watching it back, that Cech could have done better and the final goal being a stroke of luck with a deflection falling to Rooney six yards out, United didn't create as many chances as we all thought they would.
I said in my match preview that United shouldn't write us off as we are now beginning to show we are a very different Chelsea to the side you took on last term. To go to Old Trafford and create 21 goal attempts in fantastic and I don't think anyone else will do that there this season. The only downside was there was just 8 on target, but still far more than United.
Everyone played their part. I know Lampard got taken off at half time, but everyone played their part. I did wonder why Lukaku was brought on down the wing though as I felt he would be better next to Nando through the middle.
Gone are the days of a slow laboured approach to our game. They way we played, the way we never gave up and kept going was fantastic. Mata and Meireles have slotted right into our team as though they have been there for years. Everyone's contribution was great it really was and because of the way we played, the way we got the ball forward and created chances, it made me think back to our performance at Old Trafford last term.
The big positive for me was in the final third and the chances we created. On another day we would have scored 4 or 5. There was the Torres miss, Ramires taking the ball from Sturridge's foot and shooting straight a De Gea and Torres firing over the bar from close range. The goal we did score was different class and credit to Nando who showed the world he is getting back to his best. Forget the miss as United would have still won the game anyway. Torres was fantastic.
Just look at the difference. Credit United for digging out the win. You didn't play that well and I would like to think it was because of Chelsea and not because of your mistakes. You will more than likely win this league by winning and not playing well in games. I just hope we continue to evolve under AVB and get on a good run to try and push you all the way.
For now I really mean it although it's strange to say. I came away from yesterday's game with a real sense of pride in our team and our manager. We put up a fight after just five games under AVB and played a much more expansive and expressive game of football. The signs are encouraging and exciting and if we keep playing like we did, we will win more games that we lose.
It was a great game of football and like I said, I am so proud of our boys.
