I for one was astounded to hear about the ridiculous bids being made by Chelsea for Luka Modric. I have said all along that I felt personally that as far as Luka Modric playing for Chelsea is concerned, the jury is out.
It's all well and good being the main man, play maker for Spurs, but to come to Chelsea with the midfielders we have here already and to dominate possession of the ball, to be the main man, its a very different role here.
Thank god Spurs stood firm on the deal and we never signed him for that amount of money. If this was a deal worth the same as Raul Meireles then I wouldn't have minded but, for the money they were talking about, it was scandalous.
So it leaves us looking for someone to step up to the plate, someone to come forward and to be the main man in midfield. To dominate the ball and create chances.
I have said before that Frank Lampard isn't that type of a player as he likes to get on the end of things with his late runs. Ramires isn't that player either. Mikel and Romeu are defensive minded midfielders so they are out of the question.
There is an argument that Florent Malouda could have been that player but I guess these days he tends to slow the game down more in possession of the ball than speed it up!. Kalou is an unknown entity as we never know what type of performance we will get from him and his is far from the finished article.
So that leaves our two newbies in Raul Meireles and Juan Mata. Meireles strikes me as a good player, a ball player and likes to get forward and score goals, not so much create goals from nothing. He has a killer pass in him and I am sure he will bring that into our side but for me there is one player who can take the mantle we are looking for and that will be Juan Mata.
For those of you at the game against Norwich or saw on TV, at one stage with the ball wide left just inside our own half, Mata picked up the ball with a defender in front of him and caught the forward run of Ramires in the corner of his eye. Without hesitation, he played a 30-40 yard pass first time literally onto Ramires' foot as he was striding forward and but for a miss-control by the Brazilian, would have been the pass of the game...
It was sign of this class this guy has. In that one instant, it showed me that he won't hesitate to play a long ball over the top, a killer pass in between defenders and to create something out of nothing, something we have been missing and the fans crying out for this season.
Forget Luka Modric, Juan Mata is the man that could save Chelsea £40m and prove to everyone that he can be as good for Chelsea as David Silva has become for Man City.

I watched the Norwich game and remember that pass vividly. I concur with you its up to the technical staff to decide if Mata will play that role and drill that in him. Chelsea seem to lack that bite in attack - someone with a killer pass! KTBFFH!! I watched the Norwich game and remember that pass vividly.
