The transfer window closed last night and we all now know the players AVB will have at his disposal between now and January at least. After weeks of intense speculation about the club ever since AVB became our manager, our new signings have been confirmed. They are Courtious, Romeu, Meireles, Mata, Piazon, Davilla and Lukaku.
Courtious and Davilla have been sent out on loan straight away to Atletico Madrid and Vitesse Arnhem respectively so we will only get a proper look at these two from next season onwards. Piazon will join up with us in January I believe so again, more on him when he actually gets here.
The four main signings of Romeu, Meireles, Mata and Lukaku are really good signings for us and I believe will really bolster our side. I have said this time and time again, we need players that will be pushing our existing squad for their start in the side and you have to say that Romeu now provides Mikel with the competition he needs.
Raul Meireles is another good signing in my view. Alot of people have their doubts about him and his ability but at this stage we have to remember we need cover. He can play as a holding midfielder but does prefer to get forward and support the strikers. One thing to note, he linked up well with Fernando Torres at Liverpool and has an eye for a pass. With Lampard and Ramiers starting the first three games, we now have Meireles and McEachran available to step in when AVB wishes to rotate. AVB knows him well and that is another important thing to remember.
Juan Mata IS the most exciting addition to our squad. Mata can play either side or through the middle and provides AVB with plenty of options. If you haven't seen the video I have posted on here about him, then check it out. Fernando Torres in particular will benefit from him being in the side as we will be looking for him to provide the creative side of our game.
Finally Romelu Lukaku has come in and provides us with a backup for Didier Drogba (for the time being). The guy is massive, strong and can finish and is another Drogba in the making. I'm not so sure that he will start games anytime soon, but will keep Drogba on his toes.
All in all the players that have come in will bring the average age of the squad down and that's important. AVB realised he needed to freshen things up and that is exactly what he has done.
For the players that have left Chelsea on loan, Van Aanholt's move to Wigan is a good one. After signing a new contract we all know he IS part and parcel of Chelsea's plans so another loan move (but this time to the Premier League) will benefit the player and Chelsea in the long run.
Gael Kakuta to Bolton is another move that catches my eye especially seeing what Owen Coyle has done for Danny Sturridge and his confidence. Kakuta has raw talent and going to Fulham was understated last season. It's up to him to take this chance with both hands and if he does, this move could really have the same impact as it did for Sturridge.
The move for Yossi Benayoun makes perfect sense for me. I know there are some Chelsea fans that believe that Benayoun could provide us with the creative edge we have been lacking. I firmly believe this role has now been taken by Juan Mata. It was obvious that he wasn't going to start games and I have said it before, surely Josh McEachran is now ahead of him in the pecking order if AVB is looking for someone to get hold of the ball and pass it.
To replace Benayoun with Meireles makes us stronger and I am all for it. It will be interesting to see just how much he plays for Arsenal and how well he does.
So all in all, the deals we have done make sense. We have brought the age of the squad down, brought in players to keep the others on their toes and had added that little bit of sparkle with Juan Mata. I am happy with what we have done. Are you?
