Danny Sturridge has done everything expected of him by AVB this pre season. With impressive performances on our Asia Tour and scoring a fantastic goal out there, Sturridge added to that with two goals against Rangers on Saturday. The second of his goals was different class as he turned the defender inside out and finished inside the Goalkeepers near post.
Sturridge himself spoke of his two goals on Saturday and believe it or not revealed that he felt below par and ill. He said:
'I didn't feel very sharp at all. I felt a bit funny, a bit weak, a bit ill. It has been a difficult pre season because after finishing playing in the European Under 21 Championships I didn't have much holiday before coming back in, but the manager has involved me a lot which I have been very happy with.(Source)
The second one was more difficult because the defender was standing very close by when I got the ball. It was a case of me trying to attack him and drive towards the goal, and I took a shot near post and it went past the keeper.
I am just going to train very hard and once the ban ends, I hope I will be in the manager's plans"
Based on these performances he simply has to start games after his 3-game ban is over at the start of the season. Surely he has stepped ahead of Kalou who hasn't impressed at all and ahead of Nico Anelka.
Sturridge has come back to Chelsea as a confident player and a very different player from when he left us. He has been encouraged to run at players and express himself and like I said has done exactly that.
If anything, his performances in pre season has now left AVB with a problem. That problem is bringing someone into the side as cover for Sturridge. I still believe he will decide to play Didier Drogba in the "Hulk" position to the right of Torres through the middle to solve the problem until Sturridge is back. I could be wrong, but this is what I think he will do.
This pre season has always been about getting fit and impressing our manager who has openly admitted to wanting to have a look at exactly who he has to work with and who will feature in his plans this season.
Danny Sturridge has provided him with exactly what he wanted and more and surely must be on that team sheet week in week out now!.
