We have all seen the rumours, we have all seen the speculation so it's about time that I put down here on record (as pre season starts today) the players I believe need to impress AVB this week or for the next 10 days. These are the players I believe may struggle to become part of AVB's plans.
Nico Anelka.
I have a lot of respect for Anelka but bearing in mind it looks like AVB will stick with a 4-3-3 formation, it could be curtains for Anelka. He is no winger although he will always do his best and work hard for the team. Some could argue that his composure and abilities would suit playing him as the out and out striker but with Drogba and Torres ahead of him, it's more than likely Anelka could leave and head to America.
Yuri Zhirkov
We have never really seen the best of Zhirkov for one reason or another. In some games he has made a real impact but you have to hold your hands up and honestly say that he hasn't been consistent enough in games. AVB's Porto side had pace to burn in it and Zhirkov isn't the quickest. Besides, he has stated that he needs to play more games to keep featuring for Russia so a move back home could be the answer.
Yossi Benayoun.
Now I for one never liked Benayoun before he came here and was unhappy with the fact we signed him based on the fact that we should always bring in new faces that will provide the existing first team with competition for places and to keep them on their toes and with the midfield we already had here, he never did that for me.
But, he has done quite well in some of the games he has played. I personally believe he still doesn't provide the quality to give the likes of Ramires, Lampard and Essien realistic competition. For example, at the beginning of last season we would have said Benayoun ahead of Ramires based on Premier League experience. Now would you still feel the same way?, of course not. Benayoun could find himself sold on pretty quickly.
Salomon Kalou
Kalou maybe could be looking at himself more than others worried about AVB's view on him from before as he was here when AVB was here previously. When Jose signed him he said of Kalou as being hardworking, versatile, eager to improve and it's the final part that could hold sway with AVB. How much will he believe he has improved in those years away leaves alot to be desired.
The player is blessed with outstanding ability but it's far too infrequent and this could become the deciding factor.
Florent Malouda
Now some people may be surprised but for me Malouda's form last season was up and down even though he finished our top scorer, but in response to that all I will say is look what he was up against!.
For me too many times for the most part, Malouda slipped back to his old ways and the days of him running at defences, beating his marker and scoring or putting in the perfect ball for an assist became limited.
He isn't blessed with blistering pace either and that could become all important as pace in wide areas seems to be key for AVB's formations.
Jose Bosingwa
The fact that AVB likes his defenders to defend provides us with a simple answer about Bosingwa. Is he a good defender or is he a better attacking defender?. I think we all know the answer!.
Like I say, this is just purely based on my opinions and I know there will be plenty of other people that will feel maybe the same about some people and differently about others. Feel free to add your voice and opinion by commenting below.
So what do you think? Am I right about these players and this week is huge for their Chelsea careers?

I'd say your wrong about Benayoun in a few regards. First, he wasn't brought in to compete with Essien, Ramires and Lamps. He was brought in to play on ^tge wings or behind the striker (a system we never played). Also although he wasn't competing for Essiens spot, I would give to Beny anyway. Essien was total crap not only last year, but the 18 months prior to last year as well. He would be the first one gone for me
ReplyDeleteI am not sure about your benayoun comments. He played well and was unlucky to get injured. I would rather see Obi go. I would also add ferreira to your list. - butler
