Ex-Chelsea man Frank Leboeuf has stated that AVB and Chelsea have to deal with the player power that he believes exists at Chelsea. He believes it is now "out of control" and Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard must leave to get rid of the problem.
He said:
“The club is at the end of the cycle for some players. I said last season that I didn’t see them winning the title. It’s not that Manchester United were better, it’s just some players are settled down so well that they are the bosses.(Source)
It’s hard to cope with that situation and for the players themselves to find motivation. I’m not talking about John Terry. He was born and raised at Chelsea, he didn’t come from another club, and it would be a pity if he moved. If he did, I’d go there and slap him. I’d say, ‘No, you’re a Chelsea man – you will die at Chelsea’.
But for others – and I’m thinking Drogba I love him, but he needs new motivation, and maybe Lampard too. You have cycles of five years and some players have nearly been there 10. They are great players, but need to go to refresh their ideas.”
Where does he get this idea that the likes of Drogba and Lampard are the bosses? Where does he get the idea of player power?. It all stems from newspaper reports that tried to unsettle things at the club years ago and is still being reported about, and being blamed as the reason for seasons where we haven't been successful. I know Scolari started it all off and it's carried on from there.
The thing we have to remember for any club who want to be successful is that they must have a strong core of players, a strong backbone and the likes of Cech, Terry, Lampard and Drogba have formed part and parcel of that during the recent success we have had.
Are they in control? No I don't believe that for a second. Does player power exist at the club? I don't think it does at all. These are players with a wealth of experience who are leaders of men on the football pitch and every team needs players like that, not just one Captain but a few experienced leaders in that dressing room.
AVB was keen to re-affirm that point in his press conference. He was asked if JT would remain as captain and stated he would be but was quick to point out that at Chelsea these players are also important.
When a manager fails to get the best out of players there will always be questions of the players rather than look to take the blame themselves.
If such "player power" exists would we have seen the successes we have already had in seven seasons?. Would these players have been prepared to work with certain managers?
Frank Lampard had the first real serious injury in his Chelsea career and lost four months of the season. He will have to time to relax and get 100% fit for the new season.
Didier Drogba suffered from Malaria and none of us know what it's like or how much of an effect it can have on the human body.
It really get's me wound up when we see these reports and for someone like Frank Leboeuf to come out and say that they must leave is ridiculous. Imagine the Chelsea team next season without Frank Lampard! Imagine without Didier Drogba or even both of them.
Sometimes it's good to hear about ex-players and what they are doing in their lives. Then again, sometimes these players need to shut up and concentrate on what they are doing nowadays because they make statements such as this to gain focus on themselves once again.
Players come and go but there will always be Chelsea. For the near future that has to include Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba.
