Yuri Zhirkov has well and truly taken aim at Chelsea's medical team and has more or less confirmed that he wants to leave the club in order to play first team football. It's the situation with his "injury" that he has revealed hurt him the most this season, so much so, he doesn't want to talk about it cause it "hurts".
He said:
"I haven't played for a really long time, In the final games of the season in England, I wasn't even able to come on as a substitute."(Source)
There was no particular injury problem. I had to miss three days before everything healed but the doctors for some reason decided that, even by the end of the season, I had never recovered. Sometimes our doctors just don't understand. I trained fully, but they argue that 'Zhirkov is injured and not ready to play in matches'. Where's the logic? If I'm not limping anymore and can withstand training, then why shouldn't I get through games? Frankly, it hurts me even to talk about it and I don't want to discuss it.
I want to play, not sit on the bench. I don't want to discuss now any particular offers or possibilities. I'm still a Chelsea player. I only began thinking of my possible return to Russia as I want to play."
From his point of view you can understand his frustrations this season with the amount of games he has played. I think I can safely say that most of us struggle to understand why Florent Malouda played week in, week out even when his form took a nose dive and Zhirkov was left waiting in the wings.
The thing is, we will never know what goes on behind closed doors and there is always two sides to every story. You have to imagine that our medical department would do their utmost to get a player back fit and available for selection at the earliest opportunity in order for the manager to have plenty of options ahead of the game coming up at the weekend.
I have said it before on here and will say it again, when Zhirkov has played whether it's starting or coming on as a substitute, he hasn't done enough on a consistent basis to warrant his place on merit in the side and maybe that's why Malouda always got the nod.
This is a player who I think it's best now if he moved on away from the club. It would be the best move for all parties concerned. Just a shame it has come to this really.
