Fernando Torres came to Chelsea for a huge fee with a mountain of expectation that he would be the final part of the jigsaw that would deliver Chelsea and Roman Abramovich the Champions League and the Premier League title.
We all know that despite doing his best to settle in early, to fit in and to form a partnership with Didier Drogba it never really happened last season.
I will never forget the roar I heard when Fernando Torres scored his first Chelsea goal at Stamford Bridge and that memory will live with me for many years to come.
However, despite all the abuse he has had to deal with, despite the endless reports of his goal drought and his struggles at Chelsea, Fernando Torres has kept his head down and got on with his football, working hard to earn the respect of all of us and you have to commend him for that.
Nando himself has been open and honest enough to admit that last season was a season to forget. He revealed the other week that he has not had a Summer off for FIVE YEARS and hopefully with some good rest and a great pre season with Chelsea, we will see what Fernando Torres brings to the table!
Torres speaking of last season said:
"For me the past season was the worst since I arrived in England. The injury I sustained at the end the World Cup damaged my performance and made things more complicated than at any time in my career.(Source)
Twelve goals in all in a season is nothing for me. Never during the season did I play to 100 per cent, neither for Liverpool or Chelsea.
So I prefer to forget what happened. But I am not sorry I signed for Chelsea. I am convinced that when the Chelsea machine is at its full rhythm we will be very difficult to beat."
I do not have problems with Drogba. Sincerely, I am very connected with Didier. He is a sensational footballer and our possible rivalry is positive for Chelsea.
I see many goals coming and that will give us significant success. Manchester United are the champions but I insist that we are the main candidates to take their title."
No doubt the scousers will make an appearance on here gloating about the fact that we spent £50m on Torres and he didn't do much!. The thing is, and they will know this more than anyone, when Fernando Torres is 100% fit and firing, he is a sensational forward and one of the best there is.
So to all the Liverpool fans, when you are sitting there next season watching the £30m cart horse Andy Carroll miss chance after chance and not perform anywhere near his price tag suggests, and you look for score updates from the other games and see "Chelsea goal (Torres)" I would like you all to cast your minds back to when he first signed for you. Even you have to admit he was sensational and deep down in your heart, every single one of you know that if we can get a fit Torres and I am talking a rested, 100% fit Torres, you all know just what £50m has bought us compared to what you've got for £30m.
I am stating on record right here, right now, Fernando Torres will be sensational for Chelsea in the seasons to come. Class is permanent, form is temporary and when it comes to Torres, you would be hard pushed to find anyone better!
