I was reading this article by Jason Burt in The Telegraph and it really got me thinking. The article talks about the deal for Romelu Lukaku and others but moves onto to discuss the situation regarding the new manager at the club.
It's believed that Guus Hiddink is he preferred choice to come back to the club, but Abramovich is keeping two other options open to him in Jose Mourinho and Mark Hughes BUT, with a different strategy altogether as far as a contract offer goes.
The article states:
"Whoever is employed it is understood that the new manager will only be offered a 12-month deal with the option of a further year because Abramovich wants to get out of the costly cycle of paying substantial compensation should he want to make another change.
At the same time he is acutely aware that Chelsea have to stop the constant chopping and changing of managers if they are to establish themselves a a long-term credible force in European football.
So I am wondering if this is a good move for the club and for whoever comes in or will managers in the game turn their noses up at the idea bearing in mind the initial offer is just for one year?.
We all know that Pep Guardiola has the same deal in place at Barcelona and so far so good there. He has been there for three or four seasons now and has won everything there is to win. Once again towards the end of this season, a new deal was agreed and signed for next season.
There is no question that the club have had to pay ridiculous fee's for sacking managers who haven't delivered what has been asked of them or have under performed. The likes of Mourinho, Scolari and now Ancelotti have been paid high amounts of compensation because of the lengthy deals they originally signed. So the move to cut this out and offer a 12 month contract makes sense.
For the manager himself if whoever it is signs the contract, they will be aware that they need to deliver to ensure they stay at the football club. OK, that's been part and parcel ever since Roman came to the club, but this time the manager will know if he underperforms or fails to deliver there will be no massive compensation payout from the club so it works as an incentive for him too!.
The only negative with all this, would be the fact that a manager wants stability, wants to be given time to mould a side that represents him and the 12 month deal wouldn't do that.
Saying that though, how many managers out there could realistically turn Chelsea down if Roman came knocking!?
I personally am in favour of the idea. We cannot continue paying mega money to get rid of someone we had pinned our hopes on for five years, after just one or two.
Barcelona and Guardiola have set the standard and it looks like Roman is about to follow!.
What do you people think of the idea?

In current state of football, contracts, for both players and managers, seem like some bureaucratic non sense that noone really respect. I think one year contract is a good idea. We feel football with our heart but at the core, it is just business. One year contract will save us money and keep thing fresh and simple. It's a good idea.
