I think yesterday's game highlighted something I think we all agree on when it comes to the Chelsea team of 2010/11 and that is that we are lacking a PLAN B when our original plan doesn't seem to be working!.
So many times this season we have struggled to break sides down at home and away and it has cost us. So many games we have sat there watching thinking "we need to change it" but it never seemed to happen. That's the main reason behind doubts about Carlo Ancelotti's tenure at the club and until we can come up with something, the doubts will remain.
People don't like the fact that some of us still refer to Jose Mourinho's time at the club and I do understand that. However, and you all have to agree, if a game wasn't going our way or we were struggling to get a grip with the game, you would know that at some stage he would come up with something to change the way we were playing, the players on the pitch and our shape to get a result and no one can really say any different if you think about it.
The way we play at the moment for the most part is our 4-3-3 formation. In order for this formation to work we have to play at a high tempo because teams will line up against us and normally pack the midfield and look to stifle our play, break it down and then hit us on the counter a la Newcastle yesterday.
The Chelsea of last season would move the ball forward quickly and look for the killer ball as soon as possible to the front men to put the opposition under pressure. This season, the killer ball really has been lacking or our play has become too slow and laboured. As a result, it's been easier for the opposition to get numbers back behind the ball and making it difficult for Chelsea.
Whereas last season by moving it forward quickly and breaking from midfield we were able to stretch the play by spreading the ball wide to the likes of Anelka and Malouda to attack defences. This season it seems we get a point in and around the box but have a distinct lack of ideas so get sucked into playing the ball square from side to side or backwards and the opposition become comfortable defending because they can see the ball in front of their defensive line.
At times we have played well and move the ball forward and have won games by doing so. It's when we play like this we never need to come up with a PLAN B because the opposition are unable to live with us.
However, too many times this season, we have played how I have explained and when we are looking for Carlo to change our shape to win the game it hasn't happened.
That's THE biggest issue I think we have at the moment and until we can come up with something, we will face the same problems next season!.
What do you people think?
