When John Terry took to the pitch on back on Saturday against Tottenham, he made his 500th appearance for Chelsea and joined the likes of Chopper Harris, Peter Bonetti, John Hollins and Frank Lampard in reaching that milestone.
He said:
I'm very proud actually. Looking back on it, when I was 17 or 18, when I was on 30-odd games: I never predicted I'd be where I was today. I'm delighted. I've got a great rapport with the fans – a great relationship with them. I'm delighted to hit 500, and certainly I want many, many more. I've got three years left on my contract, and that's what I aim to do.(Source)
My top moment would obviously have to be the Barcelona game when we beat them here and I scored the winner. The low point: obviously the Champions League final, and missing the penalty.
But throughout my career – I've been the most successful captain in Chelsea's history. And for me, when you go down in history at a big club like this, it means an awful lot and it's something I hold dear."
It's an amazing achievement and something we as Chelsea fans need to appreciate because on two different occasions JT could have left the club. Chelsea accepted a bid from Steve Bruce as Huddersfield Manager back in the day but the move fell through and as we all know Man City apparently came a calling not so long ago.
John Terry has his critics amongst some Chelsea fans and as we all know at every single away ground in the Premier League and beyond. He has been reported to have made mistakes in his personal life and has suffered since but only off the pitch.
On the pitch and around the club he remains our leader, the person the players look to for guidance and inspiration and one person who will lift everyone on the pitch to perform better and to keep going.
Terry values a clean sheet for him and his defence as he does scoring goals and has made no secret of the fact. Saying that, he has popped up and scored some important goals in our recent history and let's hope to come.
For all those who knock him, those who ridicule him and vent their apparent anger at him, they have to look at the man he is on the pitch and wish they had John Terry in their side or someone just like him. Someone that will live and die for the cause, throw themselves in front of anything to the death to stop them scoring against us.
John Terry has the respect of most footballers he comes up against, because he isn't just one of the old school centre halves who will kick you up in the air, but because he can get the ball down and play it, win you headers, has deft touches and can control the ball in an instant.
John Terry is and has been the one of the key components in our success in recent seasons and only when he finishes playing will everyone realise the impact he has had and the stature of the man.
I for one am proud to sign his name, proud of the fact that he leads us out on that pitch and gives his all because he understands it's all us fans ask for. He appreciates the fans, always pays his respects before and after the games because he knows how important he is to Chelsea and to us.
It's been 500 games so far, let's hope there are many, many more because there is only one John Terry!.
