As I sit here in departures waiting for my flight home back to London the result on Tuesday night still weighs heavily on my mind. I hate the fact that I keep thinking "If only" but it's been the same story in the Champions League for two seasons now! The fact that Schalke are waiting in the semi-final doesn't help either! This would have been an easier opportunity to get to another final to put right the wrongs of Moscow and banish the monkey on our backs for being judged on being European Champions.
We had a great chance over two games against United and blew it once again. For some reason this season we are unable to get our form to the same standards of last season. The problem we have is now everybody is back fit, that is no longer an excuse so we need to establish reason we have faltered again.
Of course, as expected, we are reading and commenting on reports that Carlo is under huge pressure at the club. Reports today in some quarters state he could be on his way in the summer but this is speculation at this point.
My take on things is as follows, Carlo was brought to the club to win the Champions League and in two seasons hasn't got anywhere near it!. So should he be under pressure? My view is Yes he should based on purely that fact alone. I would understand if he was sacked because of it too but I am not saying this is something that should happen.
We need to realise then understand that the majority of the players Carlo manages are players who featured under Jose. Of course I would like to see Mourinho come back and finish the job he started but at the same time Ancelotti needs time to rebuild. It's a difficult situation we are faced with as we can see Ancelotti hasn't quite put HIS stamp on the side and should be given time but then again our elimination from the CL and poor league performance isn't exactly acceptable is it!?
The signings of Ramires and Luiz are the start of a new dawn at Chelsea and I believe ARE Ancelotti's doing. Torres is obviously an Abramovich one but let's be honest, with the experience Carlo has, he should be able to manage him and get the best out of him.
Chelsea have never had a settled side playing consistantly well for six or seven months now and it has cost us. That's the difference this season compared to last and I believe Carlo still cannot tell you what his best side and formation should be.
There are reports of a clear out on the cards in the summer and we could see some big names leaving the club. The question remains whether or not it will be Carlo overseeing that or someone else.
My mate from CFCnet made a good point on twitter earlier today, Jose has won the CL the same times AS Carlo! Would Mourinho do any better with our side? That's a question that will rumble on and on until an official announcement about the manager is made by Chelsea.
For me it's simple, Carlo should be given time to manage the players and especially oversee the clear out if there is to be one this summer. Carlo needs to fight his corner and negotiate for Abramovich to hand over total control to have any kind of chance of building a side in his mould. You can imagine if Jose came back that is exactly what he would ask for.
Time will tell.
