Last night everyone played well enough. Some stood out more than others but for me one player was our man of the match and that was Didier Drogba. With all the focus being on Fernando Torres and also on signs of a partnership developing between Torres and Anelka in Copenhagen, Didier Drogba has reminded Carlo Ancelotti just what he is capable of and it for me has come at just the right time.
Drogba was up for the game and his performance was good. This is what we need when we think of Didier Drogba. Think back to Blackpool away, he was useless and hardly in the game and spent most of the time chasing shadows. Last night he was hungry, wanted the ball and linked up fantastic with Anelka especially in the first half and the beginning of the second.
He was heavily involved in some of our best chances and showed willingness to work hard for the team. It's his link up play that stood out and I believe based on this performance, he was forced his way into the side to face Manchester City on Sunday.
The problem for Ancelotti would be to decide who to play up front with him. Anelka showed his qualities last night until it reached the final third and time and time again the waited too long to shoot and enabled the Copenhagen defence to close him down.
Fernando Torres came on and didn't really have much of an involvement but showed glimpses of getting into dangerous positions and also linking up with our midfield. Carlo will need to make a decision.
Getting back to Drogba, he showed the by dropping off the front man and playing slightly deeper in a No.10 role, he was able to bring the ball down and spread the play by pinging passes into the runs of Anelka and would be able to do the same for Torres. His power and pure physical presence will be needed against City and with Torres or Anelka playing in front of him on the shoulder of the last defender, Drogba could have a major part to play for Ancelotti and the team.
Isn't it strange, before the game last night we were struggling to pick two from three up front and some people had favoured the Torres/Anelka partnership. One game later and Drogba has forced his way in.
Credit to you Didier Drogba. Keep it going!
