Chelsea won the game against Blackpool tonight 3-1 with goals from John Terry and two from Frank Lampard in a less than inspiring performance. Isn't the game of football strange in that I am well pleased we won the game but still disappointed in our overall performance. Credit goes to Blackpool who fielded a weakened side tonight but still fought and scrapped for every ball and more than held their own in the first half. John Terry walking off shaking his head at half time and only half of the players applauding the travelling Chelsea fans tells it's own story for me anyway.
Before I get into the doom and gloom we do have to focus on the positives from the game. It was a potential banana skin that we avoided, we got the three points, we scored three goals, Lampard scored two more, JT got on the score sheet and Salomon Kalou made a big difference when he came on. Apart from that, there isn't really much else to take from the game.
For long periods of the game Chelsea were far too sloppy in possession, defensively and in midfield and allowed Blackpool to create numerous chances. We were making simple mistakes, not playing at a quick enough tempo which allowed Blackpool into the game. Even at 3-0 we still did the same. Blackpool scored and could have scored again as Chelsea simply switched off. We cannot afford to play like this as we will get punished.

Our goals were good. JT rising with a free header from 8 yards put us 1-0 up and we had hoped thee and then it would be the catalyst for more goals in the first half but it never happened. After the introduction of Kalou as the unimpressive once again, Didier Drogba had to leave the field injured, Chelsea upped the tempo of their play as Kalou played off of Torres and not square alongside him as Drogba had been doing.

Kalou was picking up balls in and around the box and it was a ball played into him down the left hand side of the box that brought us the penalty for our second goal. Evert came across and stuck a leg out to win the ball, he took the man first, Kalou went over and the penalty was awarded. Lampard stroked the ball home into the right hand side of the net sending the keeper the other way to make it 2-0.

Our third goal was again about Kalou. After some interplay midway inside the Blackpool half, Kalou picked the ball up and moved the ball forward, as the defence came out to make a challenge he flicked the ball into the path of Lampard making a run into the box unmarked and Lampard struck the ball across the keeper into the left hand corner of the net to make it 3-0.

Blackpool scored a well deserved goal towards the end after Jose Bosingwa tried to drag the ball back on the half way line and lost the ball. The ball was played into James Beattie 25 yards from goal and his pass into the feet of Jason Puncheon just outside the left corner of the box was controlled first time and struck across Cech into the bottom right hand corner to make it 1-3.
Let's be honest here, Chelsea had so much possession in the second half and wasted opportunities to either cross the ball into the box or play the ball square to another blue shirt but instead chose to ignore the blue shirts around us and have attempts on goal from stupid angles when a pass was the better option.
All in all it's great to get the three points, but for me there are plenty of questions about Chelsea that need to be answered after this one. More on those questions to follow shortly.
