At the end of last night's match report I stated that the game left me with plenty of questions that needed to be answered. What became apparent to me was the lack of teamwork on the pitch when it came to the final third. Instead, what we are seeing on the pitch are players who are playing for themselves and not the team to try and make an impact in games. The reason?, It's Carlo Ancelotti's new squad rotation policy!.
Think about it, Chelsea played well, scored goals and hammered sides when we all knew more or less our best eleven in a settled formation and they were all playing for each other.
What we have seen at the club since the arrival of Fernando Torres (and he isn't to blame at all in this) is Carlo's attempt to rotate players and formations and it's having a detrimental effect on the teamwork of the side in my view.
The example, Fernando Torres. I wrote a post in the early hours of this morning stating that Torres will never fit in at the club unless Carlo Ancelotti and the Chelsea players can play to his strengths and I really do stand by that.
The Blackpool game and in plenty of others this season we have seen players turn greedy and look to have a shot at goal from ridiculous and pointless angles when a pass to another blue shirt is the better option, to completely ignore a run made off the ball to try and beat their defender and generally to play as individuals. Fernando Torres has become the victim and has suffered in recent weeks.
It's plain and simple for me. The likes of Didier Drogba, Florent Malouda and Nico Anelka all know they have competition for places and are looking to do what they can to establish themselves in the team. Malouda last night was a joke. Twice he broke down the left hand side, Torres pulled off the defender and stepped back giving Malouda the option to cross the ball to him or pull it back to him and twice he was ignored.
The days of really killing these sides off are long gone at the moment as these players are looking for personal reward. It's so frustrating watching the times we counter attack sides and at times have outnumbered the defence but lack the drive to make it count no matter who scores. Time and again we are seeing chance after chance being wasted and Chelsea and our players are better than that.
For me, with just ten games remaining Carlo Ancelotti needs to discover his best eleven and stick with it. The only way we can really play our way back into contention is as a team throughout the side and not as two thirds in the defence and midfield.
Sort your lives out and remember you are playing for the shirt, for the club, for the fans and the team is more important than you are!.
