The other major signing on transfer deadline day was David Luiz from Benfica. A 23 year old Brazilian defender that can play anywhere across the back four. Of course Mr Torres has taken the majority of the headlines this week, but for me just as an important signing for us right now was the capture of Luiz.
He met his new team mates at Cobham yesterday for the first time along with Torres and took time out to speak to the Official Chelsea website. He said:
'I talked with him a lot of times before my transfer and Ramires always said he hoped I would come here because it is a special place and he would be happy if I came here,' Luiz says through his interpreter, 'and now we can play together again after our year at Benfica.Straight away you get the impression that Luiz hasn't come to Chelsea to just make up the numbers in the squad, he wants to play, he knows we are a big club in the best league in the world and he wants to make an impression which can only be good news for Chelsea.
I have known Alex for a long time. I have a lot of admiration for him, I like his football and his personality, and obviously we have both played in the national team, so he is somebody who I know well.
I always knew there would be competition because Chelsea is a big club and you have to be a top player to play here. It is a big challenge for me, but I have a strong desire to get a space in this group and establish myself and learn from my new team-mates to become a better player and have more skills.
The best league in the world is the Premier League, so I am so happy to be here playing with and against big players. All great players want to play against other great players, and I hope this is my time.
I hope I can play quickly, and I feel 100 percent to play tomorrow if I need to, there is no problem with my fitness. I want to help the team in whichever way Mr Ancelotti wants me to do, wherever in the team, as long as I am on the field I am happy. I am most comfortable in the centre but can play on the side also.
I don't know if I will speak English too soon, but I hope soon because it will help me settle here quickly, I am a quiet guy, this is very different from when I am on the field, Outside the field I am a "take it easy" guy, I have a simple life. Inside the field my personality changes because I am tough when I play, but I like to stay at home, I have my family in Brazil, and the simple things make me happy.
We have been hit hard by a lack of options at the centre of our defence and Luiz coming in will provide Carlo Ancelotti with more options and will also provide competition for places, especially when Alex comes back from injury.
Of course another option for Carlo is to push Ivanovic out wide right to do the job he did so well last season and to play Luiz next to JT. It will depend on the formation we adopt with Torres in the side as Ancelotti may opt to keep Jose Bosingwa there to provide natural width down the right hand side.
If you haven't seen the player in action and want to know more about the player we have signed then check out this video below. He is an exciting player and I am really looking forward to seeing him on the pitch in his number 4 shirt sooner rather than later. I just wonder if he will start against Liverpool?.
Great signing!
