Frank Lampard is featured this morning in the Mirror speaking of Roman Abramovich splashing the cash on Torres and Luiz, the Liverpool game and looking forward hopefully to some silverware at the end of the season. He said:
It was a boost for everyone, To sign a world-class player like Torres, and a player like Luiz, who looks fantastic, was a big boost for us. It didn’t go well at the weekend, but hopefully we can make it work.
I hope we can win some silverware this season. We have to work it right. Two big players coming into the team - we have to make sure and keep the fluency and make it work, the system and everything.
They can only help you, those two players. We’ve left ourselves a lot to do in the league - we’ll never give up on it - but we have to fight on all directions with the FA Cup and the Champions League coming up.
It was an exciting week, last week. I know it didn’t end well for us, but it was exciting. We hadn’t spent a lot of money recently. Ramires was the one buy, but it went under the radar. Now we have to make it all work.
The system worked very well at Sunderland, The issue with that is when the other team sits back on you. Liverpool did that very well. We have to find another solution then. We didn’t have that extra something special to break Liverpool down at the weekend.”
It's nice to hear that the players were excited at the news of Torres and Luiz, just like the rest of us. No doubt it gave them all a boost and it showed in our performance against Sunderland. However, Lampard is right, if we are to keep the same system to incorporate Torres, Drogba AND Anelka then we need to do something to make it work when the opposition sit back and defend in numbers.
You always know what to expect from Lampard and that's a winning mentality installed at the club since back in the Mourinho days. The likes of Lampard and Terry will never want to give up the race for the title until its mathematically impossible.
I just hope that we can get our formation sorted as soon as possible and get on a run of wins that will see Chelsea make a surge up the table and change the talk of Chelsea struggling to ensure a top four finish, turn into a realistic chance of defending our title!.
