To win football matches you need to play well, you need your players to individually put in a performance and for your team to focus on the strengths of the formation deployed by their manager. One side did that this afternoon and it was Liverpool. Chelsea never turned up or really got going and you have to hold your hands up and say that Liverpool played well. Fair play to the scousers. They have completed their own double over Chelsea and let's be honest here, we never look liked scoring at all in both games.
Of course the focus would have been on Fernando Torres. He had two chances in the game, one he blazed over the bar early on and the other was blocked by Jaime Carragher. Apart from that, he didn't get any other look in during the game. It wasn't because he played badly, let's be honest he had no service at all today so couldn't really affect the game and we once again have to admit that Liverpool defended well. I think even Liverpool fans will admit that Torres will score goals for Chelsea so his time will come.
For me, David Luiz stole the show for Chelsea. He provided a spark when he came on, put in a couple of important blocks and looked calmed and composed. However, it's so frustrating that we never put in any kind of performance. The incident involving Cech and Ivanovic in the first half was an embarrassment and I have no question in my mind that because of what had happened, it effected those two when Gerrard played the ball across the box. Both players hesitated as the ball passed them and Meireles finished on the half volley.
What's more frustrating for me is the fact that United and Arsenal slipped up and we had a chance to get a win and cut the gap to seven points, but no, Chelsea being Chelsea stuff it up once again. I will never understand for the life of me how when you play in a game like today, you can't raise your game, you have little hunger for the game and for the win and show very little to all of us sitting there.
At half time Carlo must have asked the players to play quicker, press Liverpool and create space. I can remember just once in the game that we managed to do that as Lampard passed to Anelka who had time and space to turn and shoot from 25 yards. For me the longer the game went on you could see we needed an injection of pace in the game but it didn't happen.
We have to give credit to Liverpool and manager Kenny Dalglish in particular. His formation of three centre backs worked. Drogba, Torres and Anelka had very little time and space, their three in midfield played well against our three and you have to say comparing Lampard against Gerrard on the day as to who had the bigger influence in the game, you have to give it to Gerrard.
Questions will be asked of Chelsea, our formation and the future with Torres in the side. I honestly do not think we have anything to worry about. Luiz's performance for me has cemented a start in the next game with Ivanovic at right back. When we play quicker just like Sunderland, Torres will have many many chances to score. I really hope the players looked at each other in that dressing room and realised they had let themselves and everybody down today. We cannot continue giving these type of performances anymore this season.
As for Liverpool, fair play and congratulations with your six points over us and the way you played today. You deserved it because you turned up and played well. Chelsea didn't which is what hurts me the most!.
